GAFC12th Great Annual Fish Count

The 12th Great Annual Fish Count is two weeks away on July 13th! Help us make this year's even bigger than 2012! Last year We again had the largest single-day fish count in the country, with 83 divers, and 90 surveys submitted submitted for the day. There were 38 unique species sighted, including rarities like the four-spot flounder and northern puffer!

As you remember from last year, there will be some great food and drinks for sale, as well as a touch-tank and many other activities. Water, lemonade, and ice tea will be available for free.

GAFC Call for volunteers

We are looking for people to volunteer their time at this year's Great Annual Fish Count. We need people to help with setup and take-down of all the equipment/decorations, help with food and generally help make this the best GAFC yet.

We also need people to coordinate at the dive sites. Make sure waivers are in order, and check off who is diving that day.

If you're interested in volunteering email Tiffany at enviro...@neadc.org

If you would like to help as a site cordinator, email Bob Michelson at pbm...@verizon.net

You don't have to be a member to enjoy the NEADC

There are some great ways to keep up with the dive club without joining. Announcements and upcoming events go out to our members via email, but we also post on Facebook and Twitter which anyone can follow.

The monthly meetings are open to the public, and always includes a great speaker, and a chance to meet your fellow divers. Of course you must be a member to win the GOT dive we give away at every meeting.

Members are usually the first to hear about our shore dives, but anyone can join us for a great time at a local dive spot.

We do have special members only events a few times a year that has included special behind the scenes tours of the Aquarium and a trip to a local brewery.

July General Meeting

Manta RayThis month's general meeting is a special event in combination with the Aquarium Lecture Series, and will be held at the IMAX Theater. Because of this, registration is required so we can get a head count.

On July 17th Daniel Fernando, a scientist with the Manta Trust will be discussing his research surveying fish markets for manta ray landings in Sri Lanka.

The Aquarium's Marine Conservation Action Fund was awarded to Daniel and the Manta Trust last year to survey fish markets for manta ray landings in Sri Lanka. His research contributed to the March 2013 CITES vote which significantly strengthened protections for manta rays.

There are links to his blogs and an Aljazeera documentary on the manta ray fishery that featuring Daniel's Sri Lanka project.

Visit our Next Meeting page for more info, and a list of upcoming speakers.

Bay State Council of Divers Treasure Hunt

The annual Bay State Council of Divers (BSC) Underwater Treasure Hunt competition is the group's major fundraiser. will be held on September 22 and is an enjoyable family event providing an opportunity to meet new dive buddies, compete in a friendly environment and win prizes while supporting the Bay State Council of Divers.

In the diving event, each diver searches underwater for raffle entry tokens and special prize tokens.

In the snorkeling event, teams of up to 6 divers search for submerged items. The team that finds the most items in the hour wins!

The cost is $10 and allows entry into both events. We are putting together an NEADC team for the event. Contact Anna if you are interested in joining!
