Your fearless instructor, Jonathan Lavan

  • Cost: free!
  • All you need is your computer, speakers and an internet connection. (no webcams or microphones needed).

REEF volunteer instructor and fish nerd Jonathan Lavan will be at it again - with the top 12 fish found swimming in the cold waters of the Northeast US and Eastern Canada. It's almost here!
2013 Great Annual Fish Count

REEF's annual GAFC is held during the entire month of July - next month! The idea is to introduce divers and snorkelers to fishwatching, and encourage them to try their hand at doing REEF surveys, as well as renew enthusiasm for experienced surveyors.

The New England Aquarium Dive Club is holding it's 12th Annual big GAFC hoopla once again - and you can get all the details here: http://www.neadc.org/gafc/

To search for other events in your area, or register an event your group is putting on, visit: http://www.reef.org/gafc_events/2013

Whatever you do, have a great event and let us know how it went! (and send photos - we love photos).

Send me your answer by replying to this email. I'm looking for the common names, not scientific names. Remember, anyone can guess (expert or beginner) and IT'S OPEN BOOK!! You don't have to know these off the top of your head...so come on, look it up and take a guess!

Other Upcoming Fishinars

  • Safety Stop Survey: the Top 12 Caribbean Fish You May See at 15 feet in 3 minutes
  • Perplexing Parrotfish: Caribbean
  • Lesser Known Fish of Cozumel
  • COMING SOON: Guest presenter Val Kells, artist and author of 'A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: Maine to Texas'

REEF Fishinars are free, fun, interactive online webinars that teach fish ID. Whether you dive locally or in other parts of the world, you'll find Fishinars on the schedule that are bound to tickle your fancy. Come to as many as you like!

If you guessed Oyster Toadfish, member of the Toadfish Family, you got it right! Those whiskers under the chin and flat, broad head are a good clue.

Just keep swimming, and have a great summer dive season and fun GAFC!
