Hi all,
First of all sorry for cross-posting this mail.
As you all know that we will have our techfest APOGEE 2013 sometime in March.
Project meetings will start in Jan and we will have to submit abstracts by Feb start (just a rough schedule).
So, I think its the right time to start working on project ideas.
If anyone wants to do a project on parallel computing, please share your ideas/ask for help in this group.
A few guidelines from my side for finding a parallel programming project idea are as follows -
- Identify your favorite CS/non-CS area(s) like image processing, data mining, networking, bio-informatics, financial computations, fluid dynamics, etc.
- Find few computationally intensive problems in that area
- Search for existing serial solutions of the problem
- Make sure that no/not-very-good parallel implementation exists (no copying please !!)
- Try to convert that problem into an innovative project
After step 4, please post your idea/problem here or mail me, so that we can identify the scope of parallelism and appropriate parallel programming environment for the proposed problem.
Or, you can start the other way around i.e. pick a project/software that takes impractically long time in real life, find bottleneck in its design and then resolve it through parallel processing.
As of now, PARA-SIG can help you with following parallel environments (though not limited to these only)-
- CUDA (Nvidia graphics card)
- OpenMP (any kind of multi-core processor)
- MPI (few linux systems connected over network)
Most important - You don't need to know anything about parallel processing for doing a project on it. Just come with a good idea and PARA-SIG will take care of the rest :-)
Its my sincere request to all previous participants/winners of APOGEE projects to share their projects with their juniors if they think that it can be improved through parallel processing.
Wishing you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year !!!
Regards,
Saiyedul Islam
