Team, April did not close out quietly.
Late last week, the Supreme Court dealt a significant blow to the Voting Rights Act and the legal right to minority representation in Congress.
This comes after years of repeated blows to the VRA by the court, which have left the current interpretation of the law a shell of the original statute.
These hits to the VRA don’t come in isolation. Trump has made election denial a central pillar of his political strategy. He has directed federal law enforcement to investigate free and fair elections, and tried to access sensitive and protected voter information for his own partisan purposes. He’s bullied election officials, personally, to rig elections on his behalf.
You don’t have to be a master strategist to understand the objective: He doesn’t want your vote to matter. This is a campaign against the right to vote itself, led by the President of the United States.
Democracy is the foundation of American prosperity. It is our democratic values that brought the world's best to our shores, elevated millions out of poverty, defeated fascism, and ushered in an era of scientific advancement unlike any other in human history. Democracy literally put men on the Moon.
If we lose that, we lose America. The elections this November will play a significant role in determining the kind of country our children and grandchildren grow up in. Those are the stakes.
If I make one contribution to this country, I hope it is that I was part of a movement that preserved our democracy for generations to come. We have that opportunity this year, and we can’t come up short.
It’s time to fight like hell.
