Mona, I want to tell you about the success we had last week. With the help of grassroots supporters like you making your voices heard, Democrats killed the Republican proposal to fund the Department of Homeland Security without any guardrails to protect our rights.

I’m a former Attorney General, so I’ll be the first to tell you that federal law enforcement has an important role to keep all of us safe – but that’s not what’s happening here. We’ve all seen the videos of the horrible tragedies in Minneapolis and across this country. Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, and Stephen Miller have weaponized federal law enforcement to create chaos and terror in American communities.

That’s why I voted against the Republican proposal.

And with my fellow Democrats, we defeated it.
|

Now, we’re starting the next stage of this fight.

Because we pushed together to hold them accountable, Republicans must now work with us to protect Americans’ and law-abiding immigrants’ rights. That means protections for our constitutional rights, independent investigations and accountability, and commonsense standards for federal law enforcement to pursue real public safety. If they don’t do that over the next two weeks, I will not support the DHS funding bill. This is an essential moment in our fight to hold this lawless president and his cronies accountable, and I am grateful to have you in this fight with me, Mona. Thank you.
