Yesterday, a critical bipartisan housing bill was poised to be signed into law by the president. A signing ceremony was scheduled to take place in the Capitol rotunda. The podium and stage were set up, and the cameras were in position.
But at the last second, Donald Trump took to Truth Social and announced the signing ceremony was canceled, and issued an ultimatum to Congress: Pass the most restrictive voting legislation in American history, or the housing bill is dead.
Trump is now taking the American economy hostage to try to rig the upcoming midterms.
Although not perfect, the bill is a major step in the right direction towards solving America’s housing and affordability crisis. The bill heavily restricts large institutional investors from buying up single-family homes, boosts housing stock, expands rural housing grants, and modernizes mortgage financing.
The SAVE Act, on the other hand, is the most sweeping voter suppression law in American history. It would disenfranchise millions of voters, disproportionately Black and minority voters. In some states, it could end mail-in voting. It would also open the door to intimidating election workers with threats of prosecution. It is so extreme that even some GOP Senators are refusing to support it.
In an attempt to persuade those GOP holdouts to support the SAVE Act, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller went to social media and just flat out admitted the true purpose of the bill, like some cartoon villain revealing his master plan:
Every single day, the Trump administration comes out with a new villainous plot to rig elections. This latest attempt shows just how desperate Trump really is. And as he gets more desperate, he only gets more dangerous.
Democrats everywhere must fight back. Our democracy depends on it. Defend Our Courts is leading that charge, and we are fighting on two fronts. First, we are building a firewall of state Supreme Courts with the power to protect free and fair elections, state by state. Second, we are building the movement to reclaim a United States Supreme Court that has made itself an arm of the Trump administration.
