For many people, Pride began with a protest, not a celebration. At the Stonewall Riots in 1969, police brutalized LGBTQI+ people, catalyzing a movement to fight for the right of every person to live without fear, no matter who they are and whom they love.
In the spirit of protest, we're asking you to speak out against the White House's efforts to erase LGBTQI+ people and export hate around the world.
The Trump administration's newly expanded Global Gag rules deny lifesaving U.S. foreign assistance to any recipient that acknowledges the existence of transgender and non-binary people—and to groups working to end policies that make being queer a crime.
The effects on the ground are devastating. Rural clinics providing prenatal care and HIV treatment and prevention are shut down. Groups providing safety and support to transgender people are prohibited from doing their lifesaving work.
Several lawmakers in D.C. have introduced legislation that would prevent the White House from weaponizing foreign assistance. Please urge your members of Congress to support it.
In Uganda, where Parliament passed a law criminalizing homosexuality with prison and the death penalty, our partners are still fighting back. Edward Mwebaza, Executive Director of the Human Rights Awareness and Protection Forum, said:
“It is important to stand up and say something that not many other people will say. A time is coming when the minority are going to be on the right side of history.”
