A Nashville journalist known for covering ICE raids and brutality just ended up in handcuffs.
Reporter Estefany Rodríguez-Flórez was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while documenting immigration enforcement operations. Witnesses say she clearly identified herself as a journalist. It didn’t matter — agents still took her into custody.
Now a federal judge has ordered ICE to justify the arrest, demanding answers to serious constitutional questions. It’s time for Congress to do its part by investigating ICE and Border Patrol retaliation against Rodríguez-Flórez and other journalists.

No reporter should face arrest for documenting the news. The First Amendment protects journalists’ right to document government activity. When federal agents arrest a reporter for doing that job, it threatens the freedom of the press itself.
Press freedom advocates warn this case could set a dangerous precedent. If reporters fear detention while covering immigration raids or other law enforcement actions, the public loses one of the most important checks on government power.
Congress must step in. Lawmakers have the authority to investigate ICE, demand answers, and hold hearings to determine whether agents are abusing their power to retaliate against journalists.
