Donald Trump has formally nominated his former personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, to be the next attorney general of the United States.

Blanche has been serving as “acting” (some might say “auditioning”) attorney general since Trump booted Pam Bondi from the position in April.

Blanche’s fate is now in the hands of the United States Senate.

Tell every senator: Do not confirm Todd Blanche for attorney general.

We have a little more to say about this:
  • You’re probably familiar with the role of surgeon general, a high-level position in the federal government often referred to as “our nation’s top doctor.”
  • Nobody — not even Donald Trump — thinks the surgeon general is the president’s personal physician. (In fact, the regime hasn’t filled the position so far in Trump’s second term.)
  • The role of attorney general should be thought of in the same way. The attorney general is supposed to be the country’s top law enforcement official, not the president’s personal lawyer.
  • The attorney general — who runs the entire Department of Justice, including the FBI — is supposed to serve the American people and uphold the rule of law.
  • The attorney general is NOT supposed to engage in blatant lawfare on behalf of the president.
  • But that, of course, is exactly what Donald Trump expects from anyone serving as “his” attorney general.
Public Citizen — along with dozens of other national organizations in the Not Above the Law coalition — has launched the Block Blanche campaign to challenge this nomination.

Blanche was Trump’s personal lawyer when Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to adult actress Stormy Daniels. (Giving Trump the dubious distinction of being the only U.S. president ever convicted of a felony.)

Blanche took over as attorney general after Trump fired Bondi, reportedly because she didn’t do enough to suppress the public’s interest in the Epstein files and that she didn’t do enough to prosecute Democratic politicians and other people Trump considers his “enemies.”

Blanche apparently buys into Trump’s totalitarian belief that the attorney general serves him, not the American people. And he may be even more willing to weaponize the law than Bondi was, which is really saying something.

Any senator who votes to confirm Todd Blanche is enabling Donald Trump’s authoritarianism.

Tell the United States Senate:

Attorney general is our nation’s top law enforcement position. The person in that role leads a Department of Justice, including the FBI, that is supposed to be an independent force for upholding the rule of law. Donald Trump thinks the AG, DOJ, and FBI are his personal legal attack dogs. Todd Blanche is down on all fours and slobbering at the chance to be a “good boy.” Do not confirm Blanche for attorney general.

This is a message for the entire Senate, so take action today even if one or both of your senators is a die-hard Trumpist.

Thanks for taking action.

For justice,
