Hello,
I'm considering replacing Paperwork mailing-list (this mailing-list) by
a Discourse forum. I've already put the Discourse forum online so you
can try it out :
https://forum.openpaper.work/ . I would like to know
what you think of it.
We can discuss this change here on the mailing-list and you can vote for
or against it here:
https://framadate.org/4XWLeL1B6yBmgeFA
Vote will end at the end of next week, Sunday 2019/12/15 (unless more
discussions appear to be required).
The advantages I can think of:
- More user-friendly.
- Getting rid of a dependency on a big US company.
- Getting rid of the annoying fact that the default setting of Google
Groups subscriptions is "no email"[1].
- Better indexation of the discussions by search engines.
- Still possible to get notified of the discussions by email.
The only drawback I can think of:
I try to keep hosting costs as low as possible. I've recently moved all
non-static pages of
openpaper.work and all the builders on my personal
server at home. This instance of Discourse is also running on this
server. So its uptime and speed are directly related to my personal
internet connection. I think it will be good enough, but maybe it won't.
If it ends up not be good enough, I can still move the instance to OVH
public cloud but it will cost me about 3€ to 5€ per month.
Best regards,
---
