As most of you are probably aware, Pope Benedict XVI announced his decision to step down from the Papacy at the end of this month. Since the Church will be having an election of a new Pope in the coming months, I thought I'd share some of the pertinent documents on the election of a new Pope.
In 1975, Pope Paul VI issued an Apostolic Constitution laying out the norms for such an election. Pope John Paul II later updated these norms in another Apostolic Constitution titled Universi Dominici Gregis. One of the changes at that time was the possibility of waiving the 2/3rd majority election requirement after 33 ballots to an election by a simple majority.
And then, shortly after being elected with the new norms, Pope Benedict XVI wrote a Motu Propio which reinstated the traditional norms of a 2/3 majority.
