Hi,

This is your email serving as a reminder to come to town park at 6 pm on Wednesday with your cleats, a disc or two, and a light and dark shirt. We will play ultimate.

I felt relaxed on a level I had not felt in some time last night. I was sitting on the porch looking at the moonlight. It was beautiful out and the weather was just chilly enough to where I had to put on my footy pajamas. The Denver Nuggets (my favorite sports franchise) had just won a hard fought low scoring game two of the western conference semifinals, taking a 2-0 series lead against the Phoenix Suns. This may seem potentially meaningless or trivial, but it contributed to my feeling of calm in a way I could not have foreseen. The game was a dogfight and I was all kinds of tense not but 20 minutes prior. Sitting there on the porch, I was thinking about how much time I had invested into watching this group develop, change, and adapt over the years.

Often this thought will lead to me thinking about how professional sports fandom works in society—how it keeps us from focusing on more important matters while activating the most basic and troublesome parts of our collective brains. But, at that moment, I was simply appreciative of the time I had spent watching a bunch of young men play basketball. Seeing the long form storylines of specifically Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and Michael Porter Jr. play out in my head from when I really started watching this team in earnest 6 years ago was akin to the hero’s journey from any great literary work with that format. I was grateful for the time I spent and grateful for the opportunity for more. I finally get the positive aspects of what sports fandom can be!

So, anyway, uhhhh, Go Nuggets!…and come play discball with us Wednesday at 6 pm at Town Park. That is most likely today as you read this.

Ryan
