He apparently said, during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN on
Nov. 29 that he was unwilling to use "the power of the purse" to
effect US policy in Iraq. As soon to be chair of the powerful Ways
and Means committee, we need to talk with him strongly about this.
The war in Iraq will only end when funding gets cut. As we know, last
year congress passed a bill for no more permanent bases to be built in
Iraq. However, funding for those bases has continued to come and they
continue to be built. Jim McGovern's HR4232 offers an excellent plan
for cutting funding for the war while still securing the safety of our
troops and fulfilling our obligations to the Iraqis to help rebuild the
country.
