Subject: RE: [SMBManagedServices] Virtual Fail over Device
All of my installs now get ESX 4 (ESXi is going away - but the core
product is still free) even if I am only installing a single instance of
Windows server because Windows runs faster and is more stable on ESX
than it is on dedicated hardware - no joke. Not to mention you have
given yourself a sandbox to experiment with if needed and you can add
servers as needed because even the smallest dell server can handle ESX
these days and No site will be able to hammer a single server to the
point where it needs its own dedicated hardware.
I still have a mental hang-up with a virtual hard drive existing as a
single contiguous file because experience tells me that if the file
experiences even one hiccup, your install is screwed. However, I know
that VMWare has made the .vmdk format much more robust than that, and in
the last 10 years of using VMWare workstation / server and now ESX, I've
never had one problem with a vmdk file ... but the OCD still kicks in
when I look at the filename.

Yes, that transfer bottleneck is not going away. I figure if you get the
VM running in record time, you can at least schedule transfer back to
server hardware at your convenience when load is lightest. Thanks for
tip on ESXpress. Will check it out. I am leaning toward ESXi as a
standard because the price point (free) is so good.

Axcient appliance. It is pricey at $500 per month but it takes a
running image of your servers and you can turn up a virtual image from
the appliance in about 5 minutes.
The downside, or for me anyway, was if you do that and work on your
regular server then put server back oin palce you have to copy entire
image over which takes time. I don't see a way around that but there it
is.
Another solution that has worked for us is ESXpress. Basically I setup
whatever virtualization infrastructure for our production environment.
Then I throw a souped up PC or low end server with ESXi and ESXpress on
it. Basically it does the same ting. I can spin up a backup image for
5 minutes ago and work on the regular vm server. Again same downside in
transferring image back to original VM infrastructure.

We are doing some fire drills for 1 customer using ShadowProtect restore
to desktop PC full of RAM and with big HD. I am also looking at
experimenting with VMWare Converter and VMWare ESXi yet am concerned
about transfer rate of image and conversion rate as well. Keep me posted
on your development.

Subject: [SMBManagedServices] Virtual Fail over Device
Has anyone had success in creating a home grown virtual failover
environment? I suppose this would be very similar to ZenithBDR and
others.
Basically put virtual box or use hyperv on a standalone PC with storage
for
NAS ? I'm thinking use storagecrafts head start restore here.
Shadow Protect Small Business Server 4 backing up to a windows 7 pc with
attached storage. Be able to boot to VHD should the server crash.
Perhaps
could even run Untangle as a virtual on the windows 7 machine.
Thoughts?

From the attendee list, it looks like you're skipping ClarionLive!
DevCon 2010, even though it's in the U.S. this year.
It's Oct 29-31 at Inverness in Denver. Do you not use Clarion anymore?
Our contract programmer for the P3 Telecom Billing & Management System,
Mike Tabakin, is planning to attend. As I mentioned before, we're the
ones who use it, not iTEMize.
Looks mighty tempting!
P3 Millennium is currently expanding to become a very modular and easily
customized and complete CRM, with provisioning and many other features
aside from rating and billing. Clarion continues to present the most
efficient development environment with fast processing for this purpose.
However, the owner of P3 is a former mainframe programmer and he still
uses his knowledge of speedy mainframe DB algorithms to beat the pants
off the "nouveaux" thoroughly Windows-based competition, when it comes
to calls rated per hour.
We also have clients who use P3 to analyze their usage/billing and keep
their telecom provider honest, as you apparently do with iTEMize.
Incidentally, if anyone wonders, P3 stands for Price, Power &
Performance. I guess "Millennium" just sounded good, when P3 started
back in 1988.
