Wow! September was amazing, I hope that you were able to attend some of the many events that Austin is blessed  with. Wrapping up was a Sunday, September 30th event with writer Diane Ravitch, HERE at Eastside Memorial at the Johnston Campus. Diane is a powerful speaker and advocate for kids and public education. And we had great audience participation for the hour of Q&A that followed her talk. There were at least 350 people in our Gym! Yay!

It happened quite suddenly. :-)  A friend of mine called me on a Friday afternoon. She is also friends with Diane. She learned that D would be in Austin for the last weekend in September and was willing to donate a few hours to our local groups. Yay! But that meant barely 3 weeks to pull it off! Many thanks to AISD for waiving facility fees for this. (We had NO time for fundraising.) And for generally being so very helpful. And I cannot possibly say "Thank You" enough for the army of Volunteers that made the event possible. Special Shout-Out Thank You's to EM folks Bryan, Marty & Juan!  And I can't forget to Thank Diane herself for being so generous with her time and her knowledge. I learned a lot.

Can You Help?
Austin Partners in Education is running low on volunteers for this school year. They say that the kids need another 200-300 folks to sign-up to mentor them. This is not as scary as you might think. You do not need to be an expert to mentor/tutor. You only need to be there an hour a week for a student. To listen to them; to encourage them. Call APIE at 512-637-0900, or go to austinpartners.org for more info. (In the list of schools, we have two entries: EMHS and the International HS.) Martin MS has several positions open. !!! HEY EAGLES !!!

Free flu shots at Walgreens for uninsured, underinsured

By Mary Ann Roser | Monday, September 24, 2012, 10:52 AM

Walgreens is among the Austin-area flu vaccine providers offering free shots to people who are uninsured or underinsured and can’t afford to pay, a spokesman with the drugstore chain said.

People who want a shot between now and the end of October can pick up a voucher at one of eight Walgreens stores listed below and have the shot the same day during pharmacy hours, company spokesman Vivika Panagiotakakos said.

He added that various community organizations also are offering free shots, and people can call 211 for more information.

One of those organizations is the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department, which is offering free shots to the uninsured and underinsured starting Saturday. The schedule is posted on the health department’s website .

Here are the Walgreens stores offering the shots in the Austin-area:

  • 5600 S. First St., 441-4747

  • 5345 North I-35, 452-9452

  • 2501 S. Lamar Blvd., 443-7534

  • 9307 N. Lamar Blvd., 339-8666
