Orfeu is a 1999 Brazilian romantic drama film directed by Carlos Diegues, and starring Toni Garrido, Patrícia França and Murilo Benício. Based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by Vinicius de Moraes, the film retells the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, setting it in the modern context of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival.
In 1994, Carter won a second Grammy Award for his contribution to the album A Tribute to Miles (1994), and subsequently signed a contract with record label Blue Note, for which he published The Bass and I (1997), So What (1998) and Orfeu (1999).
The film was an international co-production between production companies in Brazil, France and Italy. It is made in Brazil by French director Marcel Camus and starring Marpessa Dawn and Breno Mello. Black Orpheus won the Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the 1960 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film and the 1961 BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Orfeu (1999), directed by Carlos Diegues was a remake of Black Orpheus.
