I understand that when you post a comment you are entering into a conversation. But some popular photos have ongoing conversations that you may want to opt out of after a while. I completely understand that you can delete your original post & thereby stop receiving comments, but what if you want your original compliment to remain as a recorded tribute, but don't want to remarks month after month, which can happen with many popular photos?

I'd like an opt-out option, where I could say what I think, watch for as long as I like, then "retire" from the conversation without my original comment being lost. I have at last count 19 pages of comments & it's becoming very difficult to navigate!

Opting out of receiving comments may prevent you seeing new comments and may keep your most recent comments at the top, but it will not actually reduce the total number of comments pages you have.

Hi Douglas,
I meant that in order for the number of entries to be reduced, whenever you opt out, the whole thread disappears from your own conversations while remaining in the conversations list of the person you originally addressed the comment to. For them it stays part of a conversation, but you choose to regard it as a one-off comment.

I'm with you, Sarah--leave a "like your pic" comment, and you're stuck seeing every post that goes to that picture--it's like having in-laws! Half of the comments are in a language other than my own, and thus mean nothing to me. Perhaps instead of an opt out option, the old posts should simply fade away after a period of a month, or so. Would save on Panoramio's database headaches, too.

May be it could be useful to separate Photos from Comments:
-page Your photos with link to the page Your conversations
-page Your conversations with link to the page Your photos
Both links should be included in the toolbar on top of pages.
Page "Your photos" should have a sort of notice "You have a new comment" when applicable.
In this way you don't need to stop comments but you can decide to see photos only or comments only or both.
This will also allow to increase number of photos to be displayed on each page and so to reduce the total number of pages, same for comments.

Hi Aldo
:)

We should absolutely be able to able to opt-out of comments AND we shall be able to delete comments on OUR photos page that have nothing to do with our photos! Yet today, leaving a comment on any photo creates a ridiculous risk to see our page polluted by tons of indelible comments. Is there anyone at PANORAMIO revewing all suggestions/issues?
I don't think so. And a lack of care about this site by its owners will make many users leave...including me soon!

Panoramio is a photo - S H A R I N G site. You share photo's AND comments! If you don't want to share, than you don't belong here. So you are very right if you leave. Good bye!

Don´t comment yourself and you will not see many comments yourself. If you don´t want to follow a comment stream any more, you just delete your own comment and this stream will be gone.

All suggestions are at least read by a few Panoramio forum moderators. We tranfer these suggestions to the team. The main purposes of Panoramio are to show the world by pictures and to share our thoughts about those pictures. As Panoramio will not make a possibility to not upload photos, they also will not make the possibility to share comments. It´s totally up to you if you want to use the comment function or not.

Absolutely nobody is forcing you to stay.

This is a community-based photo website. Communication is of the utmost importance and therefore leaving comments is by no means regarded as a "ridiculous risk to see our pages polluted by tons of indelible comments".

Yes, the Team reviews the suggestions, but rest assured those suggestions that are against the spirit of the website will never be implemented.

Don't want to have comments? Don't leave them!! It is exactly the same as with clams: you don't like them? Don't eat them!! And please show some respect to those who do eat clams.

Phil you seem to be living in cloud cuckoo land! You have been a member of Panoramio since Nov 26 - 2007. Your most popular picture has received 13990 visits and received three comments! Of which you thanked two of the senders. You have 230 photos in total in your gallery and a total of 363846 views.
Your comments thread is only four pages long.
So what is your problem? Do you merely fear the threat of a flood of comments overwhelming you? Relax and learn to enjoy participating.

There is something like "implicit" opt-out.

After making a comment on someone else photo, you start receiving comments from other users about this photo in your comment stream. And after reaching certain number of other users comments (I think it is 10 pages of comments) following your comment, you are opt-outed.

However, you cannot opt-out on your demand (other than deleting your comment, what shall be IMHO used as a last resort only).

The way how the comments are propagated to the comments streams of other involved and interested users is the way how Panoramio tries to make interaction viral (to attract users to more interaction) and promote photos made by other users... when you visit someone's profile, you often see photos of other users in this user comment stream.
Of course, it could be distracting and contra productive engagement for someone.

So if you don't like it, don't comment. But call to leave is over the edge, IMHO.

Phil, thanks for the feedback.

We do read all suggestions here, but (as you can tell) don't respond to all.

And while we don't have plans to enable members to delete or edit comments on their photos, we have received and are considering feedback that would enable members to opt out of or otherwise tweak how they receive comment notifications.

Adam

Users can delete their comments and someone else's comments made on their own photos. As a general rule this is acceptable provided the comment is rude, uncalled for, etc., but by no means acceptable just because the conversation becomes too long, or obtrusive on the comments' stream.

Maybe the option should be to have the chance of hiding the comments below the user page. Just my two cents.

Ah, Draken, thanks for the correction; I had mistakenly assumed that was just an admin option :).
And thanks also for the suggestion.

Perhaps it could be useful to have 2 comment lists:

1. All comments to photos from me and where I leave some text (that's what we have now)

2. All comments only to my pictures.

I believe, a simple filter-button could change between this views.

Best wishes !
Matthias
