Trains were/are a huge part of the Canadian prairies too (the tracks were quickly laid across Canada to get the wheat/grain bounty of the prairies to the major ports)

Here's an elevator that's being demolished and a train that was going at full speed (silly shot........I was about 7 feet back from the track and the engineer stood on his horn and oh how the ground shook).

A few of the shots I have posted, sourced from my trains tag.

- Zig Zag tourist train climbing the grade over the viaducts at Lithgow's Zig Zag, built to allow trains access from Sydney to the western slopes and plains - also for the transport of wheat, goods and coal. Now bypassed with a deviation consisting of 10 tunnels. When the tourist train company took over the site the tracks had been pulled up, so were replaced with narrow guage (3'6") line, although it was originally done in standard guage (4'8.5").

- The 'Jolly Green Giant' - locomotive 3801, a Pacific class steam locomotive (4-6-2) - now privately owned but pulling occasional tourist trains, like this one in the Blue Mountains. This was also the first locomotive to haul a train all the way across Australia from Sydney to Perth, now known as the 'Indian-Pacific'.

Come over for a look.

Cheers

Stations on the Hedjaz Railway. Built to facilitate the Hajj - the journey to Mecca - it was designed by the German civil engineer Heinrich August Meissner for the Ottoman empire which ruled the area from today's Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia at the time.
In WW I the line was target of guerrilla troups led by Lawrence of Arabia.
You can still travel on parts of the Hedjaz in regular passenger trains in the original century old equipment.

This is the Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial in Shanghai, China. A most significant factor that connected the eastern and western coasts of the United States and United them into a nation was the contribution made by the Chinese railroad workers. This memorial tower of 3000 railroad spikes commemorates their deeds and attests to the continuing friendship of the people of Illinois for the people of China.

After Andermatt, the main line climbs to the Oberalppass, and reaches 2033 m AMSL there:

The short tunnel on the pass means the border of the federal states Uri and Graubünden. On its other side, already in Graubünden, the train starts to descend into the Surselva valley, and the valley of the Rhine:

The Mount Washington Cog Railway was the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway (rack-and-pinion railway) with a Marsh rack system. It climbs Mount Washington in New Hampshire, USA. The railway ascends the mountain beginning at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet (820 m) above sea level and ending at the summit of Mt. Washington at an elevation of 6,288 feet (1,917 m). It is the second steepest rack railway in the world[1] with an average grade of over 25% and a maximum grade of 37.41%. The railway is still in operation as of 2007, using steam locomotives as it always has (most dating to the 19th century, though an experimental diesel was used between 1976 and 1981). The train ascends the mountain at 2.8 miles per hour (4.5 km/h) and descends at 4.6 mph (7.4 km/h). It takes approximately 65 minutes to ascend and 40 minutes to descend. The railway is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long.
