range">Well...we already have threads in reference to 'rejected' photos for Google Earth, now let's see your photos which you didn't expect to be selected for Google Earth which actually were. Two of mine stand out easily. This ought to be an interesting topic. Have at it y'all...

This one's perplexing. It's a grass fire in Texas. A possible one time event in that location. Grass fires do occur on a regular basis though. It's dry in Texas for much of the Winter. I guess it was chosen as an example of a regular occurrence.

Interesting topic. This type of photo doesn't usually get talked about.

Another fire (a regular occurrence?) and a horrible photo anyway,
taken at high zoom through a dirty car window.

This one really surprised me. What would Google Earth want with a
picture of some sort of hawk sitting on my balcony? I wouldn't even
have mapped it if I'd known I didn't have to.

Here, again, the birds are the subject of the photo. But I guess it shows
enough of the background to say something about the place.

Hi from Canada,

Tough one. I secretly hope that most of my pics will be selected but know that not all actually are. I try to only post photos that I feel are "good" enough but have been surprised sometimes by some that have not been selected.

I do post some photos on Panoramio which I know have little chance of appearing on Google Earth. There are a few that I am surprised have been chosen:

Several of these seem to defy the GE acceptance rules, and yet...they are

ACCEPTED! - Rocks on a beach:

ACCEPTED! - Tornado (I have several of these accepted :? ):

ACCEPTED! - Backlit Train Engine:

ACCEPTED! - Nothing but the Train Engine! (Lots of these, too... :? ):

ACCEPTED! - Woodpecker in a Dead Tree:

However, they still HATE to see people, even where the person(s) is/are inconsequential...

Jessica - The world needs to know what the corner of your balcony looks like, and Google are the people to let them know!

We also now have a slight idea of what your neighbours house looks like, even though its a bit fuzzy. Make sure you get it sharp next time - and wait till that damn bird gets out of the way!

ok.. you've (along with David Rofas's macro shot of a tiny beetle, posted above - accepted) convinced me that the entire decision making process of selection for GE is a nonsense.

Globe Theatre, London:

A perfectly good picture of a unique building, not inside the building. not under any roof. Picture in my opinion is majoring on the appearance of the theatre itself, not the actors, who are quite small in shot. - this particular picture specifically chosed for submission for that reason. If I'd have been taking a picture of the actors I would have zoomed in on them. In fact I was as wide as the camera could go and had moved back to get as much of the stage awning and galleries in shot as possible.

Also a historically significant image as it was taken during the opening season of the Globe Theatre in 1997. Unique place and time.

Rejected.

Guess what? I wasn't taking pictures with GE's strictures in mind back in 1997.

Its would seem to be the luck of the draw, down to the mood and personal preferences of whoever reviews the image. I certainly see no consistent adherence to the stated policy. A picture of some rounded pebbles on a beach, or a macro shot of a tiny beetle on some moss, however beautifully shot, is not indicative of a particular place - similar pebbles and beetles can be found all over the planet.

Actually Bruce, you didnt take those pebbles in California, did you? You took that picture on Hastings beach in the UK. I remember seeing the big one with the veins there last summer.

I think there should be more pictures like this... the flora defines the region as much as the geology and other things do... isn't the whole point to have photos that show what the region is like? Anyway, I like plant photos :-)

And there's the rub. Is it? I thought the point was to show what specific places look like, but now I haven't a clue, given the evident arbitrary nature of the selection process. I could have taken an almost identical picture of a dead fern in Richmond Park in Surrey and posted it up as from Poland, beech leaves and all. Unless reviewed by a professional botanist crawling round the picture at 1:1 working out the species assemblage nobody would ever know.

Even if I posted a slightly unlikely assemblage of plants as being from Poland would they ever get challenged? I wonder.

I like plant pictures too.
Giant lillies at Wakehurst place:

Iris dell, Wakehurst Place:

though I'm guessing the first will be rejected. Having the face of a small boy sniffing the lilly adds to the picture, IMHO, as it gives a sense of scale, and a touch of humour. A bit of a problem, considering GE's policy concerning people in close up as I always like to have figures in my landscapes for the same reason. I have many landscape/cityscape shots with people large in the foreground or in the middle distance. Just a personal quirk.

View from Gurnards Head:

Coast East of Portreath Bay:

The first should be accepted, but will the second? Will my friends up on the cliff be considered too intrusive a focus in the picture by the reviewer in the same way that my Globe Theatre got rejected? They do in fact convey a useful sense of scale. Without them there the cliff in the foreground looks a lot bigger than it actually is.

Octopus drying on Jávea fishing boat at sunset

Really did not expect this one to get through
a) its on a fishing boat which does not aways moor at the same place
b) does not always have a catch of octopus

on the plus side there is some recognisable landscape in the background, but it is very out of focus. Also very representative of the traditional Mediterranean fishing culture in this part of Costa Blanca - high points for heritage.

...and one of my favourite photographs.

I wouldn't bother. If you think it through, the entire selection process is fundamentally illogical. They're trying to identify boundaries where none exist, and are thus having to invent them on the fly using subjective criteria. Bound to produce nonsense. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Quote Kris Minnear:
My dog made it to GE also!

as did mine

misanthropy is definitely built into the selection process. The only animal that isn't ok is Hom Sap. As Panoramio/Google is an American corp, I imagine it comes down to to a fear of being sued. Most US corporations seem to be afraid of their own shadows in that respect.
