I'm making this posting to take a stand against the new 'see no evil, hear no evil' policy that Panoramio has adopted for copyright violations. Your help is needed to take down yet another blatant picture thief and eventually change this ridiculous policy...

Please have a look at user Cao Lary

This user has 1557 pictures and at least ten different cameras
NIKON CORPORATION NIKON D7000
Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XS
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Apple iPhone 4S
EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY KODAK EASYSHARE M340 Digital Camera
SONY DSC-P72
EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY KODAK V550 ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA
NIKON E3200
NIKON CORPORATION NIKON D5000
NIKON CORPORATION NIKON D3
NIKON CORPORATION NIKON D70
NIKON CORPORATION NIKON D700
NIKON CORPORATION NIKON D80
SONY DSC-H2

Needless to say this user is a big fake that is stealing "his" pictures from the internet.

A lot of them come from Wikimedia

Some come from blogs
or even respected photo agencies like Caters News Agency

All this information means nothing to Panoramio/Google who hides behind the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act): they will only take action when the original photographer files a DMCA complaint. Actually, they want multiple complaints to take down this gallery.

So I've decided to play the game Panoramio wants us to play and I've contacted a number of photographers with this message:

Dear Madam/dear sir

Please note that your picture xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is being stolen by Panoramio user http://www.panoramio.com/user/8299210

Panoramio/Google will only take action when you file an official DMCA complaint at

I'm advising you to do so.

Kind regards

I'm inviting everyone to do the same. Google Reverse Image Search (and its plugin for Chrome) will help you find the original photographers. Send them a note asking to file a DMCA complaint and help take down this thief.

PS: for the record, here's my feedback: this DMCA policy sucks! So yes, this is in the right categorie ;-)

Hi Hans, I feel your frustration - I've reported this gallery a few tims, not only for the copied photos but also the 'non-photos' I've thought before about sending this kind of message, particularly when I see photos from Time magazine or national geographic!

I´d rather say nothing, before I say something I shouldn´t say

One proved copyright violation would be enough to delete the whole account?

Let's imagine an account that consists of 1.000 copyright violations, 1.000 DMCA complaints would be needed to delete the account? Come on!

And are we surprised that there is an other rotten apple in the basket.....?
No question about that I agree with Hans.

Several discussions are and were going on in the forum about users that do not respect rules and the lack of responds from the PA Team/Google.
Lett me remind you to the points I listed / These are observations concerning the breach of rules that govern Panoramio.
- uploading stolen pictures
- artificially boosting the viewcount
- photos intentionally geopositioned to the wrong place
- commercial messages

We can differ about the words that were used in these discussions, but that what is obvious to me is the frustration from  the participants.
As long as there are no effective reactions from PA/Google this will continue. Perhaps it is time to launch an ethical discussion about how
we want Panoriamio to be . Will the PA Team participate or will it be absent as usual?

Off topic? Perhaps.

Pierre, being French you'll understand perfectly this saying:
Si tous les dégoutés s'en vont il n'y a que les dégoutants qui restent.

It works in other languages as well: when all the disgusted ones leave only the disgusting ones remain... That's what's happening right now: regular users are moving away, are terminating their accounts or stopped posting new pictures. Granted: not only because of the copyright violations but IMHO a lot of problems and the way they are handled come down to disrespect towards the users. And that's a bad idea for a website that exists only by its users.

Panoramio chooses to rely on volunteers for just everything: from user-generated content, flagging inappropriate pictures, correcting misplaced pictures, translating this website, reporting bugs, reporting commercial galleries, or as group moderators and forum moderators. For years they have stressed that the quality of this websites was every user's responsability but when users clearly violate international copyright laws and claim authorship of pictures they did not make themself "Panoramio's hands are tied". That's crap!

I remember the main reason that the monthly contest got shut down was because some of the contest entries (and even winners) were stolen photos. Now we have seen galleries that contain obviously stolen photos but Google / Panoramio chooses not to shut their accounts down. Don;t you see double standards somewhere? Maybe the best solution is to shut the Panoramio site down since it contains many stolen photos...............
