I have noticed that a number of photos that were appearing on Google Earth earlier this morning are no longer appearing there. In the past I have noticed that when you browse locations on Google Earth the selection of Panoramio photos that appears changes. Sometimes its' one photo. Sometimes its another. I have noticed this both for some of my own photos and those of other authors. Today the photos that are appearing and disappearing seem to be recent ones, but this also seems to happen with photos that have been on Google Earth for several years.

One batch of photos that I took of the West Los Angeles area first appeared on Google Earth yesterday and continued to appear earlier today. Now none of them are appearing on Google Earth, no matter how close you zoom. All of the photos in the batch were selected for Google Earth.

Is this because of Google Earth or Panoramio maintenance procedures or is it because the Google Earth / Panoramio system rotates photos based on different criteria.

Why is what appears on Google earth inconsistent with photos appearing, disappearing and reappearing? Is this by design?

I have seen this with Google Maps, but not Google Earth. The only "appearing and disappearing" I find on Google Earth has to do with the altitude the photo can be seen. Some photos, when seen from a high altitude, may disapear at a lower altitude, and photos seen at a lower altitude may disappear when one zooms out.

I almost never try the Google Earth view of Google Maps, so I don't know if that layer has an issue.

That's an interesting observation. The photos in question are now appearing on Google Maps but are not showing on Google Earth no matter what zoom level you use. They were all showing on Google Earth yesterday and earlier today at various zoom levels. I wonder if this has something to do with system maintenance.

Here are some links to photos that were appearing on Google Earth yesterday and earlier today, but seem to have disappeared from Google EArth. They are still appearing on Google Maps.

http://www.panoramio.com/photo/40539640
http://www.panoramio.com/photo/40539480
http://www.panoramio.com/photo/40539134
http://www.panoramio.com/photo/40536928

The Panoramio stats for each of these photos show that they have all been viewed on Google Earth. For the last several hours, I have been unable to see them or any of the other recent West LA photos that I took on Google Earth. They were all there earlier.

Thanks for any insight on why this happens. I have also seen similar appearances and disappearances and reappearance of some photos in the past, both mine and those of other people at locations I visit regularly on Google Earth.

The photos were clearly appearing on Google Earth, marked by small squares. I did not download the klm file for my photos to view them. The same photos are appearing as small squares on Google Maps but have disappeared from Google Earth.

By small squares I mean the tiny square-shaped bluish markers used on Google Earth to show that there is a Panoramio photograph. A couple of days ago all of the recent photos of West Los Angeles that had been approved for presentation on Google Earth were visible there.

I suspect some maintenance is going on or some change has been made on the system for the most recently approved photos that have been uploaded. Photos that were visible a few days ago are no longer visible.

I wonder if there were a couple loads where the daily load, instead of adding to the previous day's daily load, ended up replacing it, essentially removing recently loaded images from GE.

It's great to have some feedback from someone with a similar experience. I didn't really think this could be something affecting only my own recent uploads.

Along with some of the latest commentators, I think it has something to do with the latest batch of uploads to Google Earth and some corrections that were made that caused recent uploads to disappear from view.

I wonder if anything from Google Earth tech staff will appear on one of the blogs that will clarify these recent developments.

There must be some problem with sync of photos to GE.
I have different problem - some of my photos are in GE twice (although I uploded them only once...)!

I will report issue directly to admins.

Thanks for all the replies. I just connected to Google Earth and notice that my photos are back. They probably did some kind of corrections.

It's strange as Tomas reports that some photos are appearing twice.

I guess the uploading procedures are not perfect. I have begun using Picasa to upload new photos to Panoramio. It seems to stall less and there is less danger of uploading photos twice.

I would just like the team to spend its' time fixing the many ongoing problems that Panoramio has instead of producing useless statistics.
What practical use are they ?
How is knowing these statistics going to affect the way you use Panoramio or your photography ?
Say your photo of a red flower got more views than your photo of a yellow one. Are you only going to take photos of red flowers from now on ?
Or you had more views on Panoramio than Google Earth. Are you not going to map your photos in future ?

At best they are just an ego boosting gimmick that will quickly fade.

Galatas, you are right. Statistics is only statistics.
But as you can see in forum, people like it and are interested in this.

I also wish some long term bugs to be corrected (e.g. errors in reading GPS location from EXIF of uploaded photos - for me basic function of site based on geo-tagged photos).

So sorry for a bit pin-prick remark, you sound to be depressed, so I wanna give you "head up".

ALL of my photos have now gone from GE (at all altitudes) after a suspicious spike in popularity, and most of the Maps ones are gone.

My conclusion,

Photos (GE-visible) ranging from ID 40.720.646 --> 41.096.421, Uploaded since Sep 13 --> Sep 22 are all temporarily GE-invisible now !

This is not the first time. Last time (Sep 19-21) my photos disappeared, they came back again within 2-3 days with the new DigitalGlobe satellite image.

I hope that when the photos come back to Google Earth again, there will be something better!

I think that GE Team are work on updating the satellite image. And this work has an effect on visibility of recently uploaded Panoramio photo.

... probably they withdrew the latest GE bulk push. I think something had once more gone wrong with popularity / altitudes. My latest uploads had already made it to GE but some pics were, from the beginning, visible from ridiculously high altitudes, some at about 100 km height, and this in a heavily crowded area (Cologne cathedral), with two pano clicks and an "age" of less than a week ... that couldn't be correct. Patience, nothing to worry about imho.

Thanks for all the latest ideas on what's going on with the appearance, disappearance, and reappearance of photos.

This is just a speculation. I wonder if this has anything to do with the new timeline feature that appears in the latest version of Google Earth.

A few days ago I installed the latest version of Google Earth. It works great with Panoramio, allowing you to browse Panoramio photos directly inside of Google Earth.

I noticed that the latest version has a new timeline feature. I wonder if some of the latest problems are related to perfecting the timeline which is supposed to allow you to get eath views backwards in time.

I think this is a problem with uploads from September, related to changes being made in Google Earth, the latest browser upgrade, and the integration of panoramio into the Google Earth browser. The photos will reappear and I believe it is best not to delete any or re-upload them. This is a problem that is likely to be corrected very soon.

Remember that photos that have been on Panoramio and Google Earth for a longer period of time tend to be viewed sooner and more easily than recent uploads. Everyone's September uploads are likely to reappear soon.

OK, probably beating a dead horse here but I just noticed that my most recent photo-set (uploaded Sept 26), which I thought was in waiting to appear for the first time on GE, possibly did appear and then were also removed like the set I reported earlier. I conclude this because I note that they are appearing on GM. I suppose it's possible they never did appear in GE and they are on GM because they get posted there earlier - not sure.

Hi, ckmcdonald
I've read your info about Google Maps and I'm very happy to see that most of my photos (including the latest one which was selected for Google Earth, just uploaded 2 days ago!) are now appearing in Google Maps. However, they are still disappearing in Google Earth.

The photos in Google Maps encourage me for waiting for the blue square in Google Earth !

Thank you very much. :D

Hi everyone,

Google Earth team had some issues before. The problem seems to be better now. Do you have any photos that are still missing and accepted to Earth more than 2 days ago?
If so, please report the photo IDs (or links to the photo) here.

What is really strange though is that it used to visible from a very high altitude, not so anymore. It is now only visible at a much lower altitude, even lover than some of my much less popular shots.

To me it seems that there there must be something wrong with the altitude algoritm.

Gyuri,

I do not know if my problem is related to this thread but here goes.

I have a number of accepted photos which appear on GE with the blue icon but the related KML thumbnails do not appear.
Examples are : 40430657 and 40430668.
Another photo taken at around the same time and position appears both as KML and blue icon on GE - 40430675

Like wise 40429557 and 40429555 - blue GE icon but no thumbnail .

The appropriate boxes on the left of GE are checked and other thumbnails appear around the ones mentioned.

If I find more,should I comment them here ?

I am not overly concerned about this situation - just making a report of a minor bug .

There is one limitation (since last year's upgrade): KML file cannot display more photos that are exactly on one place. In this case only one of the photos is there. Is not it your case?

Thank you. I must have missed that in the forum - I am sure it must have arisen before.
Two photos have exactly the same co-ordinates and the other two are different by only .03 secs.

I will re-map the position of one of each pair by a few metres and see if this solves the problem

I notice that Google Earth Team now are working to correct some errors again. Because the latest photo appearing on Google Earth is ID 41725882. Google Earth Team put this photo on GE on Wednesday 6 Oct.
After that there was no any update until now.
And some photos (ID < 41725882) disappear from time to time (Especially, the photo that extremely close to another photo).
As DL1LAM said, Photo ID > 41725882 are not yet in GE.
I'm waiting for Monday 11 Oct. for good news.

That's interesting! Looks like Panoramio started acting weird as well. In showing photos thru user-xxxxx.kml file, some photos only start showing at eye alt. of like 8000 feet, some disappear below that level (but reappear when going back higher). Weirdest thing is, the most recent three of mine aren't shown at all.
