Well, I don't want to spoil your celebration party, but this map update does not prove anything.
Very likely, general map functionality is well embedded in Panoramio pages via some kind of interface.
Internal and general map functionality can be changed without a need to adjust the interface... so visible changes in the maps can be possibly published by Maps team without any intervention to code of Panoramio. This is similar to satellite images update - they can arrive at any time. And naturally, you need not to update code for this purpose.
BTW, this new map is also used in previous Panoramio version (non-acrylic)... and I guess this version of Panoramio is not maintained anymore.
P.S. I am not sure if this is side effect of map update, or there was this bug before:
- Enter "relocation suggestion" procedure (link "Misplaced? Suggest new location" under mini map on single photo page) with some photo in area covered by Street view
- Enter StreetView by dragging Pegman to some place covered by Streetview
- Enter full screen view by clicking four arrows head icon
- Exit full screen view by clicking arrow back icon
- Enjoy the mess
- Press Esc key to revive the display
