After this first post, the purpose of this thread will be to announce the next SPC theme, because voting will not be done with forum posts, a new thread for each contest is not required.

The SPC will now be hosted at PanoramioGames.com Many thanks to Wim for providing this server.

For the player, there will be little difference, instead of attaching the photo file to an email, you fill in a form to upload it.
You will not need to upload all three at the same time.

The majority of the current rules will still apply.
Maximum 3 photos per entrant.
Size restriction, maximum 1600px side, or 2000x900 for wide panoramics,
Photos cannot have borders, frames, watermarks or any kind of recognisable mark.
Photos must not exist on Panoramio, (you can of course upload to your gallery AFTER the contest).

For new players, asking what are the rules, please read the post by Brian where it all started.
Also, it might be interesting to look at the last forum run contest.
But here are the rules to go with the new system.

Voting will be with a Voting Machine, but your vote is stored on the server, you do not post in the forum.
They can be edited before voting is closed.
Or you can choose to lock them, which prevents further edits, so that the progress of the voting can be followed - there is a graph.

Changes
Exif can be left, because it will be removed during the upload process.
Must be jpg file, and under 1Mb, that is file size, not pixels.
A title is now required, still hidden until after voting.
As with the VMC, there will be the additional extra 0.5 points that are counted for any yellow "maybe" selected photos, to a maximum of 5 photos. This is in addition to the maximum based on 10% of number of entries.
Also, the incentive for entrants to vote, or lose one point.

You do need to be a Panoramio member, and you do need to register at PanoramioGames (which is very easy).

The real change is for the MM.
There will be no gmail or Panoramio accounts to create, no G+ user name problems, no logging in and out of spc and your own account.
No need to save files from gmail, to then upload them to Panoramio.
No need to keep track of the entry names and numbers, which are required by the Excel Toolkit for the results, whether done by MM, or by a helper.
So the MM just does the important task of checking the photos are on topic, or requesting a change.

Copyright issues? It stays with the author, even when uploaded to a Panoramio spc account, for which you do not have access.
One of the spc rules is to upload lower resolution photos, and this will continue - it provides some level of protection.
Essentially, you accept the same level of risk of theft, as when the photos are on Panoramio.com.

At PanoramioGames.com use the menu, which does require a click to activate - choose "Contests" -> "SPC" -> "Your Entry"
You will browse your hard drive to select the photo to upload, as you would have done for an email attachment.
Fill in the title, which will only be revealed after voting is closed. If you have more photos, you can select them as your second and third entries.
Click "Save Entry" when ready, and be prepared to wait for the confirmation message, depending on your connection speed.
You can come back to this form later, either to enter any more photos, or to change existing ones. Clicking "Change" will show the File selection button.

If you want, you can use the menu system, "Contests" -> "SPC" -> "Review Entries", but this is where the MM can check the entries, names and titles will only be visible to the MM, until the close of voting.

Or, "Contests" -> "SPC" -> "Contest Details", this is where the MM controls the phases of the contest, instead of making posts in the forum.
You can look at a votes display form for January VMC and then click the "Results" button, because the SPC will use the same system.

For those of you who are not registered at the Panoramio Games site, please take a look at the menu "Login/Register" -> "Register",
just input your "Panoramio Id", and choose a "Login Name", and then wait for a temporary password to be sent via Panoramio PM.
You can choose to give an email address, (when you first login with the temporary password),
which means you can be sent a message when the contest starts, when voting is open, and when results are ready.

Please do not reply to this thread. Either PM me, or use the spc comments , and I will add clarification here as required.

Already on list of "things to do":
Hide names and titles on Results during voting, because the form can be viewed when player has locked their votes.
Some sort of indicator for the progress of the upload.
Need to modify the Top Ten display, from the Results form, because it uses Panoramio API to show Panoramio photos.

Best wishes, Rob

Theme for  SPC 65 will be

Hats and headgear

Hats of all shapes and headgear such as turbans, veils, ethnic and religious headgear, motorcycle helmets and other sports, everything that serves to cover the head for any reason.
With and without human presence, in a shop, in the shopwindows, on the counter of a market

I am really excited about placing first in this competition!

Thanks for all the votes and the 6 favorites. Congrats to the runner ups!

I was sure I voted, but I guess, I did not!

old age disease striking again!

I uploaded the winning photo and will be thinking about a theme tonight!

Of the top of my head I am thinking about

- Passages (interior public places, but not places of worship)

- Fast food places (McDonald, KFC, etc)

- Gates (farm gates, iron gates, palace gates)

I have checked past contests and believe we did not have any of these themes.

I tend to favor Passages!

please note you agreement or objection in the next day or two.

Ciao Tomas,
I like the two themes "passages" and "gates" even if the latter resembles in part to "June 2014 TTT - a window - a door - gate."
I do not like "Fast food places", but maybe because I'm Italian and I love eating well :)
have a nice day.

Panoramio Secret Photographer Challenge (SPC) 66

Hello from Toronto, Canada.

My name is Tomas (tomros)

and I will be the moderator of this July/August 2014 SPC 66.

Topic of SPC 66: "Passages". Duration: July 15 - August 9, 2014

There are at least 10 meanings for the word passage in the English language. Only one is appropriate for this contest:

A way, as in a hall or lobby.

My recent trip to Europe reminded me how beautiful some public areas, interior passages can be.

Of course in my city Toronto, these places are almost a necessity, as the winter here is tough and long, so you have to hide from the elements. In fact, you can walk underground for hours and miles here. Not only the cold we can hide from, but in the tropical heat air-conditioned mall is more popular than the beach.

- Accepted are images of indoor shopping malls,  subway passages (see below for exceptions), atriums or even large hotel lobby, foyer (think big), vestibule.

Black & White, Sepia or colour images are all OK. People are of course accepted, after   all, it is  a public place, but they should not be prominent part of the image.

- Not Accepted are Churches, places of worship as that was already a topic in the past.

- Also do not use images of subway platforms and escalators, railway halls, as that represents another topic again.

- No doctored photos, composite of many photographs put together to make a picture, or objects being electronically duplicated, mirrored.

Photoshop and other software adjustment are allowed, but do not go overboard. Technical wizardly should not overwhelm the subject.

All Panoramio photographers are invited to this photo challenge, where favouritism and requests for votes will not be deciding factors. Photographers are not revealed until after the voting period ends

Post your entries, View and vote at the Rob's Panoramio games machine:

Max 3 entries as per the Entry form! http://votingmachines.panoramiogames.com/entry-submit-form.php?contest=SPC. You have to log-in first.

Photos cannot have borders, frames, watermarks or any kind of recognizable mark.
No titles, no comments, no mapping, no camera data. (this is probably taken care of with Rob's program)

All entry pictures must not already be on Panoramio.

All users are invited to contact the moderator, if an entry photo is seen on any Panoramio page.

If a photo is found to have been published anywhere on Panoramio, it will immediately be disqualified from the contest. Of course, use only your photos.

The MM may choose to reject your photos, and request that you make the changes or submit another image.

Entry period:  July 15 to July 31, 24:00 Toronto time

Voting period; August 1 to August 9, 24:00 Toronto time

(note: times are not written in stone, there is some flexibility)

Further instructions - see  Rob's first post (always the moderator's right hand)

SPC-69-theme will be dormers (italian: abbaino, french: lucarne, spanish: lucera, german: Gaube). I'll open it for wind towers (persian / arabian room) and for (small) roof towers since it should be international. Pre-Start will be Sunday evening (german time). You can find some examples in the comment-thread (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/panoramio-games-competitions/7jmRSU5iCu4%5B501-525-false%5D)

Secret Photographer Challenge (SPC) 69

Hello from Germany!

My name is Martin (Martin Beitz) and I am the moderator of the SPC 69 that will take place from the 15th of October to the 9th of November.

The theme of this months challenge is dormers (italian: abbaino, french: lucarne, spanish: lucera, german: Gaube).

If you're not familiar with the word, you can find some examples in the comments thread.

If you live in Europe it will be easy to capture them since nearly all older buildings have dormers. The aim of dormers is fresh air and of course to enlarge the room, but to keep it worldwide, I've decided to include small roof towers and (for the persian-arabian areas) wind towers as well.

I ask you to stay with the topic so please avoid

- roofs without dormers, especially chimneys

- cityscapes or photos of buildings with very small dormers

- doctored photos (especially several photos that are combined to one new or to a collage)

If your not familiar with the rules please read the first posting (by Rob).

The most important rules are:

- the photo has to be unpublished within Panoramio

- the photo should not be uploaded to Panoramio/Google Views until the voting process is over

- use the upload machine that will remove the exif

- try to avoid clues where the photo took place / who made it (like watermarks, city names and so on)

- don't upload photos that you don't own

- you have to limit the file size to one Megabyte

- you can upload three photos

Send me a note (PM or Discussion forum) when you find violations of that rules. I will contact the person and try my best to find a solution then. This also may include a disqualification.

Entry period: October 15 (00:01 Berlin time) to October 31 (23:59)

Voting period: November 1 (00:00) to November 9 (23:59)

And don't forget: this is meant to be fun. So the best way would be to go through your city and discover it from a new perspective, the perspective of Johnny Head-in-Air.

Hi everybody,

In Fact I was looking for a different subject.  I thought the flags and the boats had been used before. So I found a new subject  now.

This month SPC theme will be “A working museum piece”

2014 November SPC  - A working museum piece

Hi everybody my name is Füsun (Gezginruh). I am the moderator of this month's Secret Photographer Challenge

Subject:  “A working museum piece”

Details and hints:
Something old enough to be in a museum which is kept in working order for no reason except to re-create the past..

Hint:

Many museums show working exhibits, for example motor cars, trains, clocks, etc
The challenge is to photograph such an exhibit to make it look alive!
For example, to put it in the context of the time from which it came, or to show it moving in some way.
A lifeless object on a glass case will not be considered appropriate

Off Topic  would be:

The subject is not old enough to be in a museum
The subject is working for revenue, not for re-creating the past. (eg a very old farm tractor at work)
The subject is not workable (eg is broken, has missing parts, is badly decayed, etc)

“See” you soon on the SPC.

Good luck to all!

Füsun

The contest will be open for entries  November 15, 2014, at 00.01 Central European Time .

Do you remember that this game has from one to 3 photos? You should choose a simple subject, not something very few persons have  a photo. We alredy have few participants  with a simple subject, not to speak if the subject is a bit strange. Same for the VMC.

A working museum piece covers a vast range of subjects.  Anything which is old enough to be in a museum being used for pleasure.  For example old cars, airplanes, ships, bicycles, toys…

It does not have to live in a museum!  It should not be difficult to go and find three old things being brought to life for fun, maybe some old toys from your childhood...

Hi Daniela

And another alternative; "Boats"

The picture must have as an important part of the composition a boat, ship, or raft, (or part thereof).

The size of the boat does not matter.  A model boat is OK, as is a boat out of the water.

Please note what are you thinking about this topic.

Boats is the topic U think we have had most. in all the games in the years. Every time there are discussions about from people that is living near mountains, where there are no boats,  Please no boat anymore, Füsun. You better go to the groups, maybe you can find something new but simple for everybody.

Hello Everybody!!

May I say a big 'Thank You' to everybody who voted for me in this contest, congratulations to Franco for an excellent second place, and a very special 'thank you' to Gezginruh for organising such a nice competition.  I am very honoured to have won!

As for a topic for next month, I am thinking of    Circles

The subject of the picture must be a circle, disc, or sphere in real life.  It must show as a substantially complete ellipse in the picture.

There are many possible subjects in daily life,

For example: Dinner plates, cups, saucers, glasses, traffic signs, wheels, computer disks, CDs. Cut sections of circular fruit, pipes… All these have a round perimeter

Since this is SPC everyone can submit up to three photos, and since this topic does not depend on exotic location, special lighting, or freak weather conditions, it is equally open to everybody in all countries, and with any kind of camera.  More importantly, there is plenty of opportunity to create a suitable picture indoors, which will help the majority of people at this time of the year.

I will give you more details over the next few days.

Best Wishes

Peter

2014 December SPC  -  ‘Circles’

Hi everybody my name is Peter. I am the moderator of this month's Secret Photographer Challenge

Subject:  “Circles”

A picture made of several photos photoshopped together will be deemed off topic, as will pictures of other pictures, and the artwork of others.

Hints and ideas

1)      Close up of a wheels on a car.

2)      Computer disks or CD’s

3)      Balls, other spheres.  The full moon is acceptable.

4)      Circular ripples on water.

 5)    It is allowed to make a composition of several circles, providing at least one satisfies the requirements.

Off Topic

1)      Round window being used to frame something.  (The view through the window is then the subject.)

2)      A substantial part of the perimeter is obscured.  Eg Things poking through a round hole,

3)      Do not have a defined surface. Eg The sun, flowers, fluffy balls, etc.

4)      The subject of the picture is considered something other than a circular object (for example a person riding a bicycle, the person is the subject, not the bicycle wheel).

5)     They do not show as ellipses in the picture. Eg Balloons, light bulbs, unless only the end is visible.

6)      Anything from SPC 18 - http://www.panoramio.com/user/4712010 (This comes under the rule that it must not have been shown on Pano before.)

Entry period:  December 15  to December 31, 23:59 UK time

Voting period: January 1 to January 9, 23:00 UK time

However the exact time may have to change later, as we have New Year Celebrations!

Best Wishes for the coming holidays and for next year!

Panoramio Secret Photographer Challenge (SPC) 76

Hello from Germany.

My name is Agathe (Cornleo) and I am the moderator (MM) of this May/June 2015 SPC 76.

Topic of SPC 76: "Bridges". Duration: May 15 - June 9, 2015

It's on you how you capture the bridge and not important if the bridge crosses a road, river or railroad. Also some other kinds of bridge structures are allowed (f. e. between bell towers), but they have to be architectural structures and allow people to cross something.

- Accepted are images where the bridge is the main subject.

Black & White, Sepia or colour images are all OK.

- Not Accepted are detail shots (like locks on the handrail), shots of roads, railroads and so one where the bridge is somewhere there but not visible.

Further more I don't want to see views from bridges to the surroundings (except if it is the view to another bridge) or pictures where the bridge ain't the main subject of the photo (f. e. somewhere in the background).

As always it's forbidden to enter doctored pictures, paintings or pictures that weren't made by yourself or someone who allowed you to use them here.

All Panoramio photographers are invited to this photo challenge, where favouritism and requests for votes will not be deciding factors. Photographers are not revealed until after the voting period ends.

Post your entries and votes at the Rob's Panoramio games machine:

Photos cannot have borders, frames, watermarks or any kind of recognizable mark.

No titles in the picture, no comments, no mapping, no camera data.

All entry pictures must not already be on Panoramio.

The MM may choose to reject your photos, and request that you make the changes or submit another image.

Entry period:  May 15 to May 31, 22:59 Berlin time

Voting period; June 1 to June 9, 22:59 Berlin time

Any questions or comments about this contest can be made at ***SPC questions and comments forum***

Good luck to all the friends who want to participate! And encourage all your Panoramio friends to submit photos to this contest.

It's a challenge - may the best photo win!

Good luck,

Agathe

Here we have three equal winners.

Only one can be moderator.

I see no discussion has taken place to decide.  Surely the next topic must be chosen by the next moderator?

Have two of the three winners already decided that they don't want the job?

We must give all the winners an equal chance to participate!

Hello,
Thank you very much for choosing my photo of a Calatrava Bridge in Calgary. I was thrilled to win and very grateful to you for voting for it.
My sincere congratulations to all the contestants!

I was also a little scared with running the next contest :) Daniela wrote to me about it and offered words of  encouragement. Thank you!

The next theme will be my favourite topic: Foggy landscapes. I do not see a lot of misunderstandings with this topic. Please follow these simple guidelines: fog rising over the lake, misty morning, foggy skyline in a city.
I saw so many wonderful images on Panoramio, that I think we'll have a great competition.

The competition starts at 8:00 MST (Mountain Standard Time) on Oct. 15th and I will ends at 20:00 MST (Mountain Standard Time) on Oct.  31.

Thank you all again,
Urszula.

Hello contestants!

The SPC contest for October has been closed.

Congratulations to all who entered! It has been a pleasure to view and "move along" the contest to its conclusion. All the photos show magical landscapes engulfed in fog. This is what I hoped for.

Special congratulations to Rita Eberle-Wessner for entering 2 beautiful photos with foggy valley on a sunny morning winning the contest.
Also very special congratulations to Peter_private_box, Patano, C.Johnston and again Rita for 4 top photos.

I hope that Rita will have time to lead the next SPC November contest. Good luck :)

Thank you all again,
Urszula

First I want to say „Thank you“ for all, who voted for my photos. I feel honoured to be the winner. Congratulations to all Top Ten contestants.

It’s getting harder to find a new subject and I’ll try it with

PHOTOS WITH CENTRAL PERSPECTIVE

For example corridors, hallways, streets, alleys, railroad tracks, architecture photos taken outdoor and indoor. The vanishing point should be placed within the picture.
