Press Release
16 November 2015
Child Rights Week 2015 (November 14th to November 22nd 2015)
Child Rights week is celebrated in India between 14th to 20th November the reason being Children’s Day is celebrated annually on 14th November and in 1989 the UNCRC declared 20th November as International Children’s Day. Since then this week has been celebrated as Child Rights Week by all organizations working to secure children’s rights.
The celebration of Child Rights Week is in keeping with YUVA’s work on Child Rights in the city since its inception. YUVA believes that ensuring the right of the child to the child’s development, participation and security is the responsibility of every citizen. Our work in different settlements across the city reveals that children living on streets, on pavements and in slums are the most vulnerable to physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
YUVA has been addressing these issues through its multiple programs for children, which include Child Resource Centres, Childline 1098 Emergency helpline, the children’s collective - Bal Adhikar Sangharsh Sanghathan (BASS) and balwadis. In October this year, YUVA organized a National Workshop titled ‘Towards Safe Spaces in India’ in which 52 children from 12 states (cities, towns, districts and villages) participated. YUVA has actively been involved in advocating for safe spaces for children in the city and will be running the Mumbai Marathon this year to promote the concept of child friendly cities.
This year YUVA will celebrate Child Rights Week 2015 around the theme ‘Child Friendly Communities for a Child Friendly Mumbai’. The theme for this resonates with our work on advocating for child rights in various informal communities in Mumbai. The theme is based on our belief that child friendly cities start from child friendly communities, which in turn start from child friendly homes. As such the programs, which will be led by children, will be directed towards children in the community, parents, communities and the city as a whole. Our activities are spread across the administrative wards of P North and M East, specifically in Ambujwadi (Malad) and Annabhau Sathe Nagar & Lallubhai Compound (Mankhurd). We will also have few activities with street children living in and around Kurla station.
Of special mention during this week:
YUVA will be inaugurating a Child Resource Centre in Lallubhai Compound, Mankhurd on 17th November. Lallubhai Compound is a slum resettlement colony located in M East Ward that has the lowest Human Development Index in the city; moreover resettlement has shown to have had some of the worst impacts on children. Also, a Charter of Demands will be prepared by the BASS in conjunction with children from the streets, resettlement and slum housing regarding issues of their safety. This will be taken to the elected representatives and the Mayor with who the children will dialogue about their communities and their right to protection and participation.
The focus of the week will be on the following:
i. Engaging with children in communities on creating an awareness on Child rights - Bal Adhikar Sangharsh Samiti (BASS) members will conduct programs to raise awareness on issues of safety, publicise child helpline numbers and lead discussions on child rights with children in the community. This will result in the creation of a Children’s Charter for the community and city. The same will be submitted to elected representatives and the Mayor of Mumbai by the children.
ii. Engaging with Community Based Organisations, youth and parents - Adults play an important role in ensuring the safety and well being of children. BASS members will reach out to adults through a cycle rally and other activities to initiate a dialogue on safety and responsibility of adults promoting safe spaces for children in the community. This will initiate and strengthen the formation of Child Protection Committees at the community level with the membership of adults and youth from the community.
iii. Facilitating engagement with government systems meant to protect and promote the well-being of the child - Programs will initiate an interaction with government systems such as the police (to ensure safety and freedom from fear in communities) and the health administration (especially the government ICDS program) to discuss the importance of their role in creating child friendly communities and cities.
