We're going to start work on the Pangaea website to be ready for new
years.
If anybody has any ideas of what they'd like to see on the website then
i'd be interested to hear them.

Also there's paid work available for one web developer to work on it
with me. They need to know PHP/MySQL and have experience hacking CMS's.

Simple question:
What would you want out of the Pangaea website?

please respond, otherwise you'll never get what you want.

connectivity; a forum. something that's there and there to stay.
ease of access; no fanciness, just something that looks nice and does
what it needs to (which should be, i suppose, provide information)
a LOT of media, well filed; a gallery, videos, all sorts of bits and
bobs from the previous pangaeas. if only to cheer me up (cause i
couldn't find any photos of academy 3 on that collage you gave round at
the last meeting)
posterity; not only for future reference, but for future expansion.
don't build it as a pangaea (3) site, but build it as a site for
pangaea.

i guess these are a bit vague but it IS half 3 in the morning. And i'm
the only one posting so...

Right, well from our experiences you have to cater for a number of
different people.

1) People who will just check the website. These people need upto date
news, media and other things that are constantly being updated to keep
them checking the site and keep them interested. They don't seem
interested in forums, so wont sign up and wont check one for updated
information.

2) People who check forums. These don't care what is on the website but
will sign up and check an ACTIVE forum. If the forum is not active they
will lose interest quite easily.

3) Mailing lists. Some people don't have the time/inclination to
continually check a website or forum and rely on information through
their email inbox.

Obviously you get people who are a combination of the three but we need
to cater for all 3 or we risk not getting the information to one or
more of these groups.

Don't rely on the [Manchester Students] emails either. This isn't a
valid option. Most, if not all, the people I know delete these on sight
(as they regard them as spam from the union), they need to be specific
Pangaea messages.

Outside websites are hugely popular as well. A Myspace page and a
Facebook group will go down well with the people on those sites.
Specifically on Facebook it's tied to the Uni so you can advertise it
to Uni members, even if they haven't joined the group itself.

As this google group is now set up, this might as well be used as the
only place for staff to use to talk to each other. If there is a
problem with this then I suggest we use 1 alternative like a staff only
forum and scrap this. The reason being is that if we have more than 1
place that information is being gathered, some people are bound to miss
it.

Also in my opinion the Pangaea logo needs redesigning. Not totally,
just a rethink, a colour change maybe. Obviously we still want the
recognition from both the previous Pangaea events but it needs setting
apart as an event that is NOW and not from last year.

I agree with Arron on this.
It's difficult to get everybody, but it's easy to get a lot of people.
If we concentrate on having three different media methods, we're going
to be hitting a lot of people.
The Manchester Students email is a load of rubbish, if we're honest.
Nothing is said in it, and people certainly don't do more than skim
read, even if there's something potentially relevant in it. It's
rubbish because it's TOO wide reaching. People assume they won't want
to read it. If we have a proper pangaea-only email list (which we could
send out to manchester students) then people are going to read it,
because they know the content of the email is relevant.
I agree about the change of logo; one complaint i heard last year as
that many people didn't realise there was a second pangaea for ages,
because the posters put up were almost identical, except the date had
changed, 2000 had become 4000 and there were two dark red II's behind
the word, which blended in at a distance of over 5 ft.
As good, and as nice as the design was, it might be nice to have a new,
fresh, design for this year. Perhaps even, making it a recurring theme,
that each year it gets a breath of fresh air? I mean, we could have a
very organic feel this year, or a 'prehistoric' feel. I don't know,
design isn't my strongpoint. I'm 'brain dumping' (the BBC says that
Jargon is BAD: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6118828.stm )
Anyway, that was irrelevant, sorry.

Haha...
I didn't notice this until just now, but I see that nobody even
bothered to take my views into account about the logo.
I'm sure I wasn't the only one that didn't like the logo the first (or
the second time). I remember not being the only hand in the air.
Why have we gone with it yet again?
Oh I don't know.
I just feel like the people who are making the decisions (event
directors) aren't actually listening to what's being said on the
ground. I know that after my first interview with Elliot from the first
pangaea, I made some points that were never acted upon (mostly
involving guest list places and workarounds).
I just don't feel...involved in Pangaea, i suppose. I feel like it's
running itself and I'm just a cog in the complex wheel of a student
party.

i dont design the logo
and you aint suggested a specific logo design
there's been published publicity meetings announced at the open meetings; which was your chance to get involved with the publicity and make changes to it
they made ammendments to the logo and design of flyers/posters and finalised their decisions

we're using facebook as our main communication tool now, put further posts onto there so that others can contribute

if there's problems in the way things work then outline them clearly there (i'm not guaranteeing that we'll fix them but we do try)

i dont quite see what the problem is that you're describing, other than one of general communication. i'd suggest you check facebook regularly (twice a week or so) and suggest categories of information that you'd like to be informed about so i can try and implement them into the website and our general organisational structure for next time.

regarding being involved in the event, your venue seems to run itself well so we interfere as little as possible. i haven't seen you much and haven't had one-to-one discussions with you this time around. i just cant be around as much with my degree, sound hire company, web production company and preparations to go to japan all eating into my time this year*.

i feel like i've got to the point in sim city when all your old tenants start complaining. oh why oh why did i put it on the harder difficulty setting?

elliot

* side gripe (nothing to do with anyone on the pangaea team) - I hate people who go on about how busy they are, but do f'kk all all day long (re: one person in particular who non of you probably know)
