I am getting an error when attempting to encode avi files. I'm not
sure if it has to do with the encoding profile I have set up or not.
Has anyone else experienced errors encoding avi files or have any
insight?

Hi, Chris.

I tried encoding avi file to "Flash Video SD"  and worked fine.

If you send me the file you tried, I can try uploading on our EC2 Panda instance.

I went back and pulled a sample avi file off of the msdn website and
this one does encode. The avi files we are having issues with are
being created with a logitech webcam. We had our video guy look into
the issue and he said the files we are having a issues with need
IV50 / IV41 codecs. Does Panda support these?

AVI is a container format, it depends what codec is actually being used to encode the contained content. I.E there's hundreds of formats that fall under the AVI format extension. It's an annoying situation.

Hi Chris.

The range of encoding support does not depend on Panda, but rather depends on ffmpeg (open source encoder/decoder Panda uses underneath) encoding capability, I think.

To be honest, I know very little about all the variety of encoding, but I did a quick googling.

It looks "IV" stands for "Intel Indeo Video". IV 2, 3 are supported by ffmpeg, but  4 and 5 are not supported by any open source decorders.

Hope this information helps.

Makoto
