hi there,
it seems that we keep getting questions about status of Ubuntu on Panda, and I have to admit that we haven't done a great job at giving detailed status so far ... so let me try to summarize where we are!
- for Panda and OMAP4 it all started with Ubuntu 10.10. We worked with Canonical to provide 'official' images hosted on ubuntu.com. see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OMAPMaverickInstall. such image contains only free stuff. Because there is some goodies that aren't 'free' for Panda we created the OMAP PPA on Launchpad where we released components for
- graphics : binary blob for user space DDK, and dkms kernel module for the kernel side stuff - multimedia : binary firmware for the ducati/ivahd + customized GST packages (sources) and all the TI plumbing (sylink, tiler, domx, ...)
- connectivity : using TI proprietary wlan drivers and firmware
- then came 11.04. we again made 'official' images available on ubuntu.com with 'free' stuff and 2.6.38 kernel. Since we had moved to mac802.11 drivers in between there was no need for any proprietary connectivity anymore. We release the DDK in the OMAP PPA, but we never really released any Multimedia stuff. There was Rob's DCE wiki that adventurous folks could use... the reason why we didn't release MM is not that we gave up on Ubuntu, but it's more related to some internal priorities and projects...
- we are now a couple of days away from 11.10 release, and we are working full speed to release it of course on ubuntu.com, but also with all the addons in the PPA. It will be using 3.0 kernel and we will release DDK and MM components in the PPA. For the MM components we will use gst-ducati and DCE by default instead of gst-openmax that we used in 10.10, so you won't need to be brave to use DCE...
I recommend anyone to plan to migrate to 11.10 which should be a great release. Moving forward we will provide updates in the PPA more often than before. We are also planning to move to new kernel when they are released. You can even start playing with 11.10 development images : http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/oneiric/ beta1 image is available, and beta2 should be there really soon.
You might have noticed that Linaro is also making Ubuntu LEB releases, see https://wiki.linaro.org/Platform/DevPlatform/Ubuntu. Both Ubuntu and Linaro will use the same components (kernel, gfx, MM, ..) but each team has their own release schedules and scope !
