xorg autodetect doesn't work for omapfb?

Panda and am having success communicating with it over serial console,
but autodetection of the USB mouse and keyboard and HDMI monitor
doesn't work. I have the impression that I must edit the xorg.conf
file by hand, a task which I often undertook 5 years ago but haven't
done for a while. Is this correct?
To give more details, I have copied 00-device-omapfb.conf to the
board's root filesystem as directed at
http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/OMAP4_Panda. A "yum list installed
xorg\*" at the CL shows a long list of packages and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that a bunch of shared object libraries are
loaded. When I connect an HDMI monitor with an HDMI-DVI cable to
the DVI port, I get a "FATAL no screens" message from booting into
runlevel 3 and then typing "startx." My monitor is not listed in
/usr/share/hwdata, but I thought I'd give autoconfiguration a shot
anyway. The files /dev/fb0 and /dev/fb were not created
automatically, so I made them with mknod and ln, but this didn't
change the errors.
Similarly, I see a couple of messages about the mouse and keyboard in
/var/log/messages, but "lsusb" does not show them. Should I proceed
by using the ARM/OMAP4 Panda/private-demo or should I just try to cook
up a working xorg.conf? My immediate goal, if it matters, is to
run OpenGL libraries for Qt applications. Thanks for any
suggestions.
