Boquete businesses get together to save the community [2]

The newly formed Boquete Business Association met this Friday to
discuss the flood and to implement some much needed damage
control of a different kind. All of the negative press about the
floods in the highlands have begun to affect all of our
businesses.

Conflict between government, developers and the "original
people" [3]

I found an article by Eric Jackson on his Panama News [4]to be
particularly interesting as a clash between civilizations is
taking place here in Panama. It involves the indigenous people
of the country and their complaints against the government who
they believe are not dealing fairly with them on a number of
issues.

Panama ranks no.8 in LatAm murder rate for youth [5]

In this ranking Panama would rather be in last place, but
unfortunately they are in the middle of the pack of 16 countries
rated by World Health Organization for young people between the
ages of 15 and 24 who are victims of murder.

Ministry cancels 65 public works contracts [6]

I understand the challenges the MOP has to deal with when it
comes to contractors, especially for major works such as roads
and bridges. There have been a number of projects canceled
during the construction process due to failure on the part of
the contractor.

Floods boost hydro power production [7]

Recent heavy rains may have caused devastation in the Chiriquand
Bocas del Toro provinces, but the swollen rivers are a boon for
the generation of hydroelectric energy throughout the region. In
fact, upward of 80 percent of all energy consumed in the country
Tuesday was derived from hydroelectric plants, according to a
report by the Empresa de Transmisi ElñÄtrica, S.A. (Etesa). The
remaining 20 percent originated from thermal power and other
sources.

Boquete flood update with photos [8]

Although things appear to be getting back to normal in Boquete,
what we hear about Bocas Del Toro to Colon on the Caribbean side
of the mountain range is not good. The only road across the
mountain range has been shut down now for days and the bridge at
Sixola to Costa Rica is out. The only access is by air or sea
and the storm is making it extremely difficult for either of
these options.

Canal administrator receives well deserved accolades [9]

Although you will read commentary from me questioning the
economic viability of the canal expansion, the one thing we all
agree on is the effective management of the exsiting canal since
the handover to Panamanian management. Under the leadership of
Administrator/CEO Alberto Aleman Zubieta they have been very
efficient and effective in running the canal. Now Mr. Zubieta
has received a well deserved award for Excellence in business
practice and management. Congratulations to you sir!

Let the good times roll! [10]

Panama's economic numbers are driven by construction, real
estate and hotels. The tourism authority claims that a
significant number of tourists are coming from Europe which is
driving the high occupancy rates. But will it continue?

Panama economy expected to slow by 50% [1]

As this article points out, the Panama economy is being driven
by construction and those of us involved in this industry know
that the hand writing is on the wall. Although the powers that
be try to put a positive spin on it (that even a 5-6% growth
rate is very good) the fact is that any slowdown means loss of
jobs, loss of revenue for the state and political pressure to do
something about it.

First Commercial Ship Takes Northwest Passage [2]

Rayes, who was on the vessel during its trip through the
Northwest Passage, said the company informed the coast guard,
which put an icebreaker on standby. "They were ready to be there
for us if we called them, but I didn't see one cube of ice," he
said.

Dubai, Panic in the RE market! [3]

The classified ads in Dubai read like an obituary for a
real-estate market that until a few months ago seemed immune
from the global credit crisis.

Risk watchdog warns about Panama City real estate [4]

Business Monitor International [5]has issued their Watchdog
Warning about the potential risk of the real estate market in
Panama City. Of course the local developers and media are still
silent on the matter as many millions if not billions of dollars
are at risk if the cat got out of the bag, so shhhhhh.

Occupancy permits have a deceptive name [6]

The occupancy permit is the trigger point under most contracts
to GET THE FINAL PAYMENT from the buyer. Like many things in
Panama, this is another area where things are not so
transparent. When there are millions of dollars at stake,
finding sympathetic authorities is not a difficulty that can't
be overcome.

Russian warship to visit naval base in Panama [7]

MOSCOW, December 3 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian destroyer will
visit on December 5-10 a former U.S. naval facility in Panama as
part of the task force's current Caribbean tour, a Navy
spokesman said on Wednesday. The Udaloy class destroyer Admiral
Chabanenko participated this week in the VenRus-2008 joint
Russian-Venezuelan naval exercise in the southern Caribbean as
part of a task force from the Northern Fleet, led by the
nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky.

OECD pressures Panama...again [8]

This morning I received a final installment about the myths
about tax havens from my friend Dan Mitchell at the Freedom and
Prosperity org. Coincidentally, La Prensa [9]comes out with this
article today about the OECDs efforts to eliminate Panama as a
tax haven. Be sure to watch the video from Dan below the
article. He makes a great argument.

Financial crisis washes up in Costa Rica [10]

Reservations for the upcoming Christmas season, a time that
sustains many tourist operations through the quiet, rainy
months, are down at Rogers' business by 30 per cent compared
with last year. The situation is worse at other popular
destinations, with hotel operators near Lake Arenal, where
foreigners are drawn to its active lava-spewing volcano,
reporting a 50 per cent decline.
