New Panama opportunities [1]
From time to time I post opportunities for investment,
partnership, specials skills and services directed at the land
development industry in Panama. Here are the latest entries
The Crash Course- Most of what you need to know [2]
So what is going to happen over the next few years? Paul McBride
sent me this very informative "Crash Course" video that helped
me to understand why this is happening, what to expect and what
to do about it. It is free and I encourage you all to take the
time to look at this important tool. It's a real eye opener.
U.S. - Panamanian Partnership [3]
Voice of America has an article and podcast on relations between
the U.S. and Panama. This is a very upbeat editorial "reflecting
the views of the U.S. government".
Mixed signals in Panama cruise ship future [4]
"Tourist wave set to hit", "More cruise ships will visit
Panama". These headlines from a local paper caught my eye this
morning and I thought it would be a good idea to look into what
affect the economic downturn is having on the cruise industry
and how this might affect Panama.
Report on corruption in Latin America [5]
One subject I write about frequently is the affects of
corruption on the business climate in Panama. Several months ago
we participated in a study by the American Chamber of Commerce
in Latin America regarding the affects of corruption on our
businesses. Questions about our experience with corruption and
our assessments of its damage along with other queries were put
forth.

Cuba takes credit for energy savings in Panama [2]
You have to read between the lines and know a little about what
is really going on to be able to discern fact from fiction when
it comes to socialist propaganda.
Trouble in Paradise-Cap Cana hits the skids [3]
The Dominican Republic has been flying high during the rich
times ofthe past decade. I have met a number of developers who
have been developing in that country and it seems this is coming
to a sudden end. According to this article from a Local source
there [4] Trump may be in trouble and it looks to lead to
significant political problems as well.
Low oil prices = no weapons for Chavez [5]
`You have a country with an oil boom, that doesn't know how to
save, doesn't know how to set up productive industries that
generate jobs, and goes into debt,'' said Elsa Cardozo, a
professor of political science and international relations at
the Universidad Central de Venezuela. ``Then oil prices fall and
the party ends.''
Costa Rica, Panama Sign Free Trade Deal [6]
"Costa Rica is Panama's major market in Central America", said
Torrijos, who assures that the trade deal will mean a greater
exchange of goods between the two countries as the two countries
have strong commercial ties. The trade deal frees up of any
tariffs 90% of the goods now exchanged between the two countries
and with the rest of products dropping duties in the next 3 to
17 years.
Japan Banks to Help Fund Panama Canal Expansion [7]
The Japan Bank for InternationalCooperation [8], the state-owned
overseas lender, said it will signan $800 million syndicated
loan for the expansion of the Panama Canal that will help Japan
boost trade with the Americas.
Why Some People Have A Better Head For Languages [9]
Learning a second language is usually difficult and often when
we speak it we cannot disguise our origin or accent. However,
there are important differences between individuals with regard
to the degree to which a second language is mastered, even for
people who have lived in a bilingual environment since
childhood.
The reality of education in Panama [10]
"High school students attending both public and private schools
are graduating with the equivalent of a seventh grade level
education, according to a study sampling more than 30,000
students around the country."
So, what does it all mean? [11]
As we near the end of 2008 the reality of our situation is just
starting to come to light. Everyday we see headlines using words
like meltdown, collapse, recession and depression. Words that
were only used by the crazy contrarian's who were warning of the
dangers. As all this unwinds many will be hurt and some will
prosper.
This is how you market Panama [12]
Back in early 2006 I began extolling the advantages [13]of
marketing Panama to the UK market. I cannot take any credit for
the success of the effort, but over the last few years a number
of British papers and websites have started promoting Panama as
an alternative to Spain.
How does the financial crisis affect Panama banks? [14]
Although he (Bank Superintendent) expresses his concern
regarding exposure to foreign buyers of condominiums, the
relative exposure of $3 billion for 5400 units is fairly low
when compared to their deposits. What he did not address (Which
is really not his concern yet) is what happens to the
other30-40,000 units that have not received construction
financing.
Bid for locks delayed.... again [15]
If I were the suspicious type I would say that this delay is
more to do with politics than those stated by the canal
administration. This is the second time the bids have been
delayed and I expect at least one more in order to put it past
the election in May.
Price index for construction steel increase 200% [16]
As a builder in Panama I can attest the huge increases in
construction costs we have experienced over the last few years.
Homes that used to cost about $40 a square foot to build in 2002
are nearly double that today. In the last year alone we have
seen a 200% increase in the cost of 1/2" steel rebar according
to this brief article about the new construction price index the
government is putting out.
