Subject: [CPNA] Assessing Interest in Efficient Electric Hot Water Heaters

Dear Friends,

Palo Alto is considering a new voluntary program to replace home gas-fueled water heaters with cleaner, healthier, more efficient electric heat pump models. Please take this one-minute survey,  conducted by the environmental non-profit 350.org Palo Alto in cooperation with the City of Palo Alto and Santa Clara County. The purpose is to gauge community support for this initiative. Deadline for response:  Midnight,  Friday, September 23.

The goal for the city is simply to gather contacts to assess support; filling out the survey is not a commitment to participate in the program. Survey responses will be shared with the City Council before their scheduled October 3rd vote on the program.

The proposed program will offer Palo Alto utility customers an easy way to switch their methane gas water heaters to an electric heat pump model. The goal is to reduce the burning of fossil fuels. Methane (“natural gas”) use in our buildings accounts for over one-third of our greenhouse gas emissions.

If the program is approved, the City would coordinate the installation by a pre-approved contractor.  No haggling over prices, no hassling over a permit, and no scrambling if your water heater fails suddenly. (Average life of a gas-burning water heater is 10 years). The program under consideration would  allow residents to pay for their new appliance over time, on their utility bill.

Take the Survey

Please feel free to forward this email to others who live in Palo Alto.  Survey deadline  is midnight, Friday, Sept 23rd. Thanks for spreading the word!
