Conversation with Etan Thomas and Kevin Powell on Police Brutality & White Supremacy Dear Friend,
We would love to have you join us in a conversation with Etan Thomas and Kevin Powell on Monday, February 28th at 7 PM by Zoom, on the last day of Black History Month.
This event is part of our 2022 membership drive. When you join or renew your Peace Action New York State membership at any level -- that's your ticket to this event!
Peace Action New York State has a special connection to Etan Thomas. Last October he accepted the William Sloane Coffin Jr. Peacemaker Award, along with Renee Montgomery. In his acceptance speech, he talked about his own experiences being stopped by police on the way to a high school game in Tulsa, speaking out against the Iraq War when he was an NBA player with the Washington Wizards, and interviewing his heroes like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, John Carlos, and many others, for his book, We Matter: Athletes and Activism.
Etan's new book, Police Brutality and White Supremacy: The Fight Against American Traditions contains voices from many different vantage points but centers the victims and families that have been affected by violence. It is raw, moving, and inspiring all at the same time. The Library Journal review of the book says, "“Thomas’s interviews demand careful reading by all who want to expose racism, hold police accountable, and create an American society that practices social justice.”
We are excited that Etan will be having the conversation with Kevin Powell, author of The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy's Journey into Manhood. Gloria Steinem says, "As a charismatic speaker, leader, and a very good writer, Kevin Powell has the courage...to be fully human, and this will bring the deepest revolution of all."
