Thank you if you have already RSVP'd!
We have a NEW LOCATION for the Peace Action Holiday Gathering this Thursday, December 5th (6:30 to 8:30 pm), at the Bernie Wohl Center, 647 Columbus Avenue (between 91st and 92nd Streets). This is only 3 blocks from our usual meeting place, which is undergoing renovations, at 88th Streets. Please note the change.
At our Holiday Gathering, we will be honoring the Kings Bay Plowshares 7. Seven Catholic activists entered Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in St. Mary’s, Georgia on April 4th, 2018, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After being recently convicted of three felony counts and a misdemeanor charge for entering the base armed with hammers, crime scene tape and baby bottles containing their own blood, they are awaiting sentencing. Initially facing up to 25 years in prison, prosecutors now are asking for sentences of 18 to 24 months in prison.
In a November 25th interview with Democracy Now!, Martha Hennessy, one of the Seven and granddaughter of Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day said, "...the Pope has said it’s not enough to simply speak out against nuclear weapons; we must act. We must walk. We walked onto that base. We need to raise a voice very clearly and even be willing to put our bodies on the line to help the world to understand that the malevolence, the secrecy, the lack of democracy from beginning to end with this nuclear arsenal, the production, the maintaining, the threat of using—it’s the greatest evil in the world that any of us can face in our lifetimes."
