How to Activate Tableau Desktop Offline
If you need to activate Tableau Desktop on a computer that does not have internet access, you can use the offline activation method. This method requires you to generate an activation file on the offline computer, transfer it to an online computer, and then download a license file to activate Tableau Desktop.
Here are the steps to activate Tableau Desktop offline:
- On the offline computer, open Tableau Desktop and click Start Trial Now or Activate.
- On the Activate Tableau dialog box, click Activate by Email.
- On the Offline Activation dialog box, enter your product key and click Generate Activation File.
- Save the activation file (activation.tlq) to a removable storage device, such as a USB flash drive.
- Transfer the activation file to an online computer that can access the Tableau website.
- On the online computer, go to https://www.tableau.com/offline-activation and sign in with your Tableau account.
- Upload the activation file and click Download License File.
- Save the license file (license.tlf) to the same removable storage device.
- Transfer the license file to the offline computer.
- On the offline computer, open Tableau Desktop and click Start Trial Now or Activate.
- On the Activate Tableau dialog box, click Browse for License File.
- Select the license file and click Open.
- Click Activate.
You have successfully activated Tableau Desktop offline. You can now use the product without internet connection.
Offline activation is useful when you need to install and use Tableau Desktop on a computer that does not have internet access or has limited internet access. For example, you may need to activate Tableau Desktop offline if you work in a secure environment, travel to a remote location, or have firewall restrictions.
Offline activation requires a valid product key that you can obtain from the Tableau website or from your Tableau account manager. You can use the same product key to activate Tableau Desktop on up to two computers. If you need to activate Tableau Desktop on more than two computers, you will need to deactivate one of the existing activations first.
Offline activation is a one-time process that does not require periodic renewal. However, if you upgrade Tableau Desktop to a newer version, change your hardware configuration, or reinstall your operating system, you may need to reactivate Tableau Desktop offline using the same steps as above.

- On the Deactivate Product Key dialog box, click Deactivate by Email.
- On the Offline Deactivation dialog box, click Generate Deactivation File.
- Save the deactivation file (deactivation.tlq) to a removable storage device, such as a USB flash drive.
- Transfer the deactivation file to an online computer that can access the Tableau website.
- On the online computer, go to https://www.tableau.com/offline-deactivation and sign in with your Tableau account.
- Upload the deactivation file and click Submit.
You have successfully deactivated Tableau Desktop offline. You can now use the product key to activate Tableau Desktop on another computer.
