To Our Community in the Diocese of San José:
Santa Clara County, together with the greater Seattle area, has been at the epicenter of the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) across the United States. Over the
past few weeks, our Diocese of San José has followed the guidance of Santa Clara County health officials in responding to the presence of the virus. The Governor of California has weighed in recently requesting that no gatherings assemble with more than 250
persons. In my recent discussions with county health officials, I have been told that we have reached the exponential phase of the epidemic, with the number of those testing positive for the virus expected to rise dramatically.
As a Diocese, our top priority remains the health and safety of our families, children, and the vulnerable of our community. Out of an abundance of caution, we
have closed all Diocesan school facilities from today, Friday, March 13, through Friday, March 27. In addition, I am requesting that
all parishes, missions, and chapels in the Diocese of San José suspend all public Masses beginning Saturday, March 14, until further notice. Baptisms, weddings, and funerals may be celebrated but should
be limited to immediate family. Faith Formation classes also should be suspended until further notice. All parish gatherings are being suspended until further notice.
With the preceding in mind, I have issued a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass during
this time for all Catholics in the Diocese of San José.
Though public Masses are being suspended, I encourage parishioners to remain connected to their parish community and to pray for each other. The Diocese and several
parishes will continue to livestream Sunday Masses in various languages. Information on these Masses and other spiritual resources are provided on our Diocesan Response to Coronavirus webpage at dsj.org/coronavirus.
During this difficult time, I ask that
our priests, deacons, religious, and parish staffs remain attentive to the needs of shut-ins, the elderly, the sick, and the vulnerable through creative outreach. Priests
will remain available for individual confessions and urgent pastoral needs, including the anointing of the sick (Last Rites). I also encourage our parishes to reach out to parishioners through phone campaigns,
social media, and other methods.
We are profoundly saddened that we are not able to celebrate the Eucharist as a community, but we are reminded that Christ always remains with us, especially in
times of uncertainty such as these. Be assured of my continued prayers for you and your families.

A Nuestra Comunidad en la Diócesis de San José:
El Condado de Santa Clara, junto con el área de Seattle, ha sido el epicentro de la propagación del Coronavirus (COVID-19)
en los Estados Unidos. Por las últimas semanas, la Diócesis de San José ha seguido las recomendaciones de los funcionarios de salud del Condado de Santa Clara en cuanto a cómo responder a la presencia del virus. Recientemente, el Gobernador de California
recomendó que no se juntaran asambleas de más de 250 personas. En mis pláticas recientes con los funcionarios de salud del condado, se me comunicó que hemos llegado a la fase de propagación exponencial de la epidemia, y se espera que la cantidad de personas
que contraerán el virus subirá dramáticamente.
En la Diócesis, nuestra prioridad es la salud y seguridad de nuestras familias, niños, y los más vulnerables de nuestra
comunidad. Como medida de extrema precaución, hemos cerrado todas las escuelas diocesanas empezando hoy viernes, 13 de marzo a viernes, 27 de marzo. Además, pido a las parroquias, misiones, y capillas en la Diócesis de San José que suspendan todas
las Misas públicas a partir del sábado, 14 de marzo, hasta nuevo aviso. Pueden celebrar bautizos, bodas, y funerales, pero deben limitarse a sólo la familia directa. Las clases de educación religiosa deben ser
suspendidas hasta nuevo aviso. Todas las reuniones parroquiales están suspendidas hasta nuevo aviso.
En vista de lo precedente, en este tiempo otorgo una dispensación de la obligación de asistir a Misa a todos
los Católicos de la Diócesis de San José.
Aunque las Misas públicas serán suspendidas, les pido que permanezcan conectados a su comunidad parroquial y sigan rezando

Durante estos momentos difíciles, pido que nuestros sacerdotes, diáconos, religiosos, y personal parroquial permanezcan
atentos a las necesidades de los encerrados, los ancianos, los enfermos, y los vulnerables por medios creativos. Los sacerdotes seguirán disponibles para la confesión individual y las necesidades pastorales urgentes, incluyendo la unción de los enfermos (Extremaunción).
También animo a nuestras parroquias de conectarse con los feligreses a través de campañas telefónicas, las redes sociales, y otros métodos.
Estamos profundamente tristes por no poder celebrar la Eucaristía como comunidad, pero recordamos que Cristo permanece con

27 tháng 3. Thêm vào đó, tôi yêu cầu tất cả các giáo xứ, họ đạo, và các nhà nguyện trong Giáo phận San Jose tạm ngưng tất cả các Thánh lễ chung, kể từ thứ Bảy, 14 tháng 3, cho tới khi có thông báo mới. Các

친애하는 산 호세 신앙 공동체 여러분께:
여러분도 아시다시피 산타클라라 카운티는 시애틀 지역과 더불어 미국 내 코로나바이러스Coronavirus
(COVID-19) 의 감염 진원지였습니다. 지난 몇 주간 산 호세 교구는 산타클라라 보건기구의 도움을 받아 코로나바이러스에 대처해 왔고 또한 캘리포니아 주지사가 250명 이상의 모임이나 집회를 금지하는 행정명령을 내리기도 하였습니다 . 나는 지역 보건 당국의 위원들과 심사숙고한 결과 현 상황이 광범위한 전염병 단계에 이르렀고, 또 양성 반응이 검출되는 환자들이 기하급수적으로 높아질 것 을 우려하고 있습니다.
교구의 최우선 목표는 남녀노소를 불구하고 모든 신자의 건강과 안녕입니다. 그렇기에 우리는 심혈을 기울이기 위하여 3월 13 일부터 3월 27일까지 교구 내의 모든 부속 학교를 임시 휴교 조치시켰습니다 . 이에 추가로 나는 산 호세 내의 모든 성당과 공소, 경당에서의 모든 미사를 3월 14 일부로 후속 지침이 있을 때까지 임시 중단시키기로 하였습니다. 세례성사와 혼인성사, 장례 미사는 계속하되 가족 외에는 참석하지 않도록 권고하며 성경 공부 등을 비롯한 모든 본당의 행사를 후속 지침이 있을 때까지 중단시킵니다.
이에 나는 이 기간 동안, 산 호세 내의 모든 신자의 미사 참석의 의무를 정지시키는 관면을 내립니다.

공동체로 모여 영성체를 나눌 수 없음에 깊은 슬픔을 느끼지만 우리는 그리스도께서 항상 우리 안에 머무심을 기억하고 특히 이런 고난과 환난 속에서 우리와 함께하심을 명심하여야 합니다. 여러분과 여러분의 가정을 위해 기도하겠습니다.
