I ran the VMWare Converter on two Hyper-V guest machines, each as if doing a conversion from a physical machine. The conversion completes successfully. When I try to start either one of the resultant VMs on a separate ESXi server, I see the VMWare BIOS splash screen, and then I just get a flashing cursor.
Has anyone had [successful] experience converting Hyper-V guests to VMWare guests?
Here are the details:
VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone v 4.0.1 build-161434
Source host OS: Windows SBS 2008 Premium (SP1)
Guest OS 1: Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (SP2)
Guest OS 2: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (SP2)
Target host OS: VMWare ESXi 4.0.0, 171294

The lack of response seems to indicate that I’m alone in the “moving from Hyper-V to ESXi” boat.
For those interested, I downloaded the trial version of Symantec’s Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition, and used it to create an image of the server (come to think of it, I probably could have done the same thing with the StorageCraft product). Anyway, the VMWare Standalone Converter turned that image backup into a perfectly functioning VM.
I’m still amazed that this stuff works as well as it does—kind of like I’m still amazed that we can make over a million pounds of metal, fuel, and people fly.
Russell, Very interesting and good to
know in regards to what you are doing with Virtualization. I may want to talk
to you about that sometime. You would probably get a better
response to your messages if you Post them over at the FlaIT Google Group
(Fl...@googlegroups.com) that we All switched to some time back. I thought you
were a member there and your posts here at the old PalmBeachIT list may be an
oversight on your part. If you are not a member at FlaIT then you could be really
quick with a request to join from you. Brian, John or myself would be happy to
approve you. Good Luck… Have a Super Weekend! -Scott
Thanks, Scott, for pointing that out. I am actually a member, but I guess out of habit still addressed the e-mails to the old group sometimes. I checked, and since April, 43% of my initiated threads actually went to the old group. Now there’s a useless piece of trivia for everyone to enjoy! Have a great weekend.
I’m taking StorageCraft and Acronis to Xen. Along the same lines but not specifically what you were asking for, so I didn’t reply with wild off topic non-replies.
It’s great stuff! I’m going to have to start investing in eSATA cages.. waiting to move data from a USB2 drive is killing me.

We should really torpedo this mail list…it has been long enough I think?
