Greetings Brewers,

I hope this finds you well. I couldn’t be happier to see the national COVID risk map finally turning colors besides shades of red! I’m cautiously optimistic that we are on the other side of the pandemic and things might start getting back to normal.

The first Saturday in May falls on the 7th this year. We’re switching things up slightly and headed out to the home of Terry and Karen Gartland in Flemington, NJ. The address is 5 Sawmill Way, Flemington, NJ 08822.

We haven’t even begun talking about recipes yet. So, if you have any ideas, let’s have them!

On a related topic, I’m actively working on trying to setup up some meetings for the Spring and Fall. If you have any ideas, please pass them along. While I think we can find places to meet and topics to cover, I’ve learned that our typical formula for a homebrew club meeting might need to be modified as we migrate back to something resembling normal. More on this another time.

Hope to see you all for the Big Brew!

Apparently you can take a perfectly workable Tripel recipe, and
completely ruin it by dry hopping.

Love the idea, I'm down for any of those, but I'd vote for either "Frau (Wheat)" or "Red Eyes (American Red Ale)".

And shout out to Terry and Karen for offering their place. Looking forward to it!

Hi Marc:

Excellent idea! My vote is for the American Red Ale, which I’ve been missing for a while. And it is the only one labeled “American”. I’d be fine with the witbier, too. Going into summer I’m not really looking for tripel, strong ale or imperial strength. If you get varied opinions, and I expect you will, people could brew which ever of these five recipes suits their taste.

Cheers,

Mike

Good afternoon Brewers!

We’ve decided to go with the Red Eyes (American Red Ale) for the Big Brew. Our next task is to get a head count of brewers so we can source ingredients in time. As a reminder, the date is Saturday May 7 and the location is Terry’s home in Flemington. You are more than welcome to come hang out if you are not brewing. However, if you plan to brew but you don’t intend to brew the chosen recipe (or you insist on sourcing it yourself), I’d also like to hear from to help plan out the brewing area.

I would very much like to have a headcount by this Friday if possible -- especially given the unpredictability of supply chain issues. The price for each 5-gal batch should be around $35.00. But, we don’t have that dialed in yet. If you have any questions, please fire away.

Very much looking forward to catching up with you all with the smell of wort in the air!

I am not able to make it this time due to other commitments.

Would love to come by and drink beer late afternoon if folks are still around and bask in the camaraderie that accompanies brewers and great beer.

Hi Lance:

I’m in for a 12-gallon batch. I had sent a note to Marc earlier. Looking forward to seeing you and and all the PALE ALES brewers that day.

For those who prefer well water like I do, host Terry let me know earlier that he has a well with a new pump and plenty of capacity. Even for a bunch of thirsty home brewers!😁

Cheers,

Hi gang - I plan to brew a pale ale recipe variation based on a recipe that won Gold at the AHA competition in 2018 - Alabama Hopslammer American Pale Ale.  Made this once before and we loved it.  Gary, if you're up for that I already have the malts, just need hops and yeast and it will be easier for 2 of us to work the process.   I have a 15-gallon boil kettle and a mash tun plenty large enough for a 10 gallon batch.

I'm letting a few neighbors know what's going on, maybe one or two will stop by for a beer and to see the process, one guy brewed a hefeweizen with me years ago but decided it was too much work to get into it.  Also, my son Brian has been serving beer at Lone Eagle in Flemington for the past 8 months.  They promoted him to shift leader and the customers seem to appreciate his knowledge of beer, so the Lone Eagle folks like him.. One of the founders, Bob King, said he might stop by to meet the group.  Marc, if there's any interest among club members for an in-person meeting this summer, Lone Eagle has nice facility here and I'm pretty sure they'd be happy to host a meeting and tell us how they built the business. No food sold there but many nearby places for delivery.  Their beer was crap-to-mediocre for the first couple of years, but has improved dramatically in the past 2 years when they hire a new head brewer.

Anyone heard from Larry?  Do we need to plan mint juleps?

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Hey Terry,

I am totally down with this recipe.

Let's connect next few days and make sure we have what we need for hops and yeast and any specialty grains. I could try to pick up some of it before the big brew and also coordinate times and equipment i can bring. Gary

Hi Terry and Fellow Brewers:

The weather forecast looks soggy & windy for this Saturday’s Big Brew, with 90% probability of rain and 15-25 mph winds. This could present challenges in terms of keeping propane burners lit and staying dry. Are we still on Saturday, or is there a rain-date plan? The advance forecast for the following Saturday looks more promising.

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Yes, Terry and I were just discussing over texts that we need to reschedule. The weather looks like crap. According to Joe Bair, the PALE ALES 20+ year streak of beautiful weather on the BB day is over.

We have two potential dates for the rescheduled BB. The primary date is in 2 weeks (May 21). There is also an outside chance that Terry will be free next (May 14), but he’s not sure yet. I’m hoping to hear back from everyone that planned to brew with us (Lance, Gary, Mike Ultee, and James) about those two dates. But, I’m also interested to know if anyone that had a conflict for this Saturday is able to make either the 14th or the 21st.

Cheers!

Marc

👋 all,
I strongly wanted to jump back into the BB this year, but the May 7th date was a blocker for me.  I'm available May 14th (but not 21st), though I'm heading out of town for a week on May 15th, so the timing is tight.  Please let me know if there is anyone that requested a share that can't attend the rain date (if the 14th), and I may be able to scramble and buy out their materials to participate.

The 21s  of may looks better for me ....We have something in the calendar for the 14th but I could try a work around.

Very disappointing....but the weather has been cold, crappy and unpredictable for a few months now.

What a difference 2 weeks can make in the weather. We went from soggy and rainy to what is probably going to feel like a scene from Dune.

I’ve got the ingredients all set and ready to go including printed brew sheets. Just a few reminders and notes:

  • We kick things off at 8AM.
  • The driveway is reserved for loading/unloading.
  • Park in the street. Please do not park directly across from the driveway across the street.
  • The grill will be available.
  • Some weather-related checklist items: sunscreen, popup canopy, and hat.

Of course, with any Big Brew, brewing is not required – come hang out! There always seems to be plenty of food and homebrew to share.

Here’s the address again so its handy:  5 Sawmill Way, Flemington, NJ 08822-4518

Hi Tim:

Yes, great seeing you and other PALE ALES folks yesterday. Glad to see your chickens enjoying our spent grain. Thanks also for your fine Kielbasa.

Here are some more photos from the day. It was a hot one, but the light breeze in the afternoon and the shade-making canopies helped. My two fermentors are bubbling along nicely this morning in my basement, where the air temp is a pleasant 70ºF.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Terry:

Thanks again to you and Karen for hosting this year’s Big Brew event. Glad to hear that the oxygenation was a success for your batch. I have been oxygenating my brews for years. Yeast need oxygen during the initial phase of life to build up their cell walls and produce key ingredients for growth. Then they can go anaerobic in peak condition. Using pure oxygen to treat the cooled-down wort insures rapid, full saturation within 20-30 seconds, as opposed to minutes with air, which is only 21% oxygen.

Initially I used a small regulator that fits on top of a disposable oxygen tank, the red “Benzomatic” type sold by Home Depot, Lowes and other hardware stores for about $10. My system was minimal with a thin, flexible plastic hose attached to a porous stainless-steel “stone” through which the oxygen bubbled. This system had two problems. First, the small tanks would run out after a few uses and often unexpectedly, forcing me to always have a spare tank around. They were also incapable of being refilled, so I was throwing away empty tanks. Secondly, the oxygen stone dangling on the end of a flexible hose was hard to control and see. I solved the tank problem by buying a standard, refillable 20 cu. ft. oxygen tank. I got a full-sized, 2-stage regulator to go with it, rather than the flimsy single-stage one that came with the disposable tank. The second problem I dealt with by getting a 22” stainless-steel oxygen wand with an integrated oxygen stone on the end.

Most of this equipment can be found at home-brew supply shops and mail-order places like BrewHardwareWilliams Brewing and MoreBeer. To get the 2-stage regulator, however, I went to Amazon, for a fine regulator from the welding-supply company SÜA. I understand that Blichmann Engineering now offers an impressive in-line oxygenation system for homebrewers, but I have not tried it out. This would allow you to oxygenate your beer as it exits an in-line plate-chiller and thereby flow oxgenated directly into your fermentor. That would be cool.

Yours in fine home-brewing,

Mike

Mike Ultee, the oxygen blast certainly kicked off strong fermentation. Can you share what kind of oxygenator you have? I think I'd like to get one.
