Hi Everyone!
I have to give a very big thanks to everyone who has heeded God's call and generously given to support this mission. I just received a fundraising update, and as of the 26th, there was only $199.39 to raise yet!!! I'm truly amazed at how quickly everything came in! Just a couple weeks ago, there was almost $2,000 to raise; and now there's slightly less than $200!!! Truly God is awesome, and everyone who has listened to His voice has played a part in a miracle that leaves me speechless!
Currently I'm in Brook's Point in the lowlands at an internet cafe, so I can't write long (P35/hour, yikes!). However, I'd just like to give you a quick update while I have the chance.
Lebin, the wife of our head lay-pastor, Seblitu, is currently recovering from typhoid fever, a strong case of malaria, and a bacterial infection of the blood. We had her brought to the district hospital in the lowlands for treatment because she was having a bad reaction to the quinine that was needed to treat her malaria. She spent a couple days in the hospital, but is well enough now to return to the mountains. She not strong enough to hike for herself yet, but Pelawans are very lightweight and the men are particularly strong, so Seblitu will probably carry her the 4 km back into the mountains himself (he's the one who carried her out also). Please pray for her continued recovery.
Today we also had another patient, Idlina, checked in to the hospital with possible breast cancer (this is the primary reason that I'm down here instead of in the mountains). We'll know more shortly when I return to the hospital. Please pray especially for Idlina as well. To my knowledge, she has not accepted Christ yet, so time may be running short for her to do so!
Please also continue to pray for Nurgina and her mother. Nurgina is quite well again, but has more trials ahead as the gungurangs (elders) of her village call a bi'sada to determine whether they will follow the "American God" or the "Palawano gods." Undoubtedly there will be many questions for her (and most likely her mother as well), so please pray that she will be prepared for it, and that she will be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit as He gives her the words to speak in the hour they are needed. Pray also that this whole situation will finally open the ears of the gungurangs to the Gospel, and help them to realize that Empu' Parey (the god of rice) and Empu' Isus (Lord Jesus) are not the same. One other detail of Nurgina's story that I recently learned was that her uncle, Mami, had indeed tried to do some sort of witchcraft to fix her (in spite of her refusal during the few moments she was able to hear in her home village of Neruhungan), but it didn't work. This, of course, stands in stark contrast to the immediate results when Nurgina's mother prayed in Neruhungan for forgiveness for them being at the siburan and she began breathing again. God's power was again demonstrated when her mother prayed again for forgiveness for them a couple days later and promply heard a voice speak into her ear (although they were alone at the time) saying, "Are you worried for your daughter?" Her mother replied, "No, my hope is in God." The voice then instructed her to take the cooked rice in the corner and feed it to Nurgina. After praying over the food, she fed it to her and Nurgina suddenly began to wake up (come out of her stricken state)! Pray that the witness of this triumph of God over the spiritual powers currently being worshipped by the Pelawans will awaken the gungurangs to the Truth and lead them to an acceptance of Christ as well!
While financial support is always important to this project, you can see that prayer support is equally important! For everyone who reads this newsletter (whether you have made any financial contributions or not), please remember to keep the Pelawan people in your prayers, as well as us missionaries. We may be the ones out here in the field, but all of your prayers play an equally significant role in reaching the Pelawan people and helping the gospel message to push forward into the unreached corners of this sin-sick world!
Thank you again from the depth of my heart, for all of your generous, sacrificial support; financial, time, prayer, and personal energy! Know that the investments you've made will bring returns throughout all the rest of eternity! May God bless you all!
With love in Christ,
Jeremy Gable
