Unbroken

The knocks in life have honed my wits
And my noble laughter nicely fits
Inside the pockets of pride’s vests
When I must face life’s cruelest tests.

I’ve lived the best and worst of times,
And learned what things to leave behind
To not be shaken by the darts
That sink into my wounded heart.

The dismal niches I have filled
Took sheer determined strength and will
To stand up to the constant wear
On my defenses when I cared.

I’ve swallowed with unuttered sighs
The silent tears when I would cry
Instead, I forced a merry note
And dissolved the lumps that filled my throat.

I’ve weathered grief and so much more
With God beside me, fought my wars.
You see, these lumps are all the tears
I swallow through my pain and fears

And with that same steadfast command
I’m stronger for my purpose and
The blessings that have multiplied
Are worth each tear that I have cried.
