I've been a Tony Buzan Licensed Instructor for several years. (one of the few TBLIs in the USA). I've used Mind Manager, Mind Genius, iMindMap, Mindomo, MindMasterand others, but Xmind is BY FAR my favorite and my 'go to' mind mapping software. It's simple but powerful. The BEST feature is that Xmind works similarly on Android as it does on MS Windows. Of all of the MindMapping software that I use, I recommend Xmind to my students and clients more than any other program. Keep up the good work!!
made it super easy to use the mindmap as a fullscreen presentation tool. As a speaker, it helped stay focused on topic under discussion and not get lost with lots of context switching and scope creep. I think I will try it more
This software has changed my business and my life! The first step in creating my new business was born because my coach suggested using Xmind. In doing my first map I realized that what I had been doing in my 30 year career had value for others and it showed me a path to using it that I had never realized was there. I have since created multiple programs, teach others and have a platform for reaching thousands in my target market. It all started from one mind map! I have continued to use Xmind to create classes, write books and build my business. It's an amazing tool!
I was not convinced about mindmapping representation before I discover XMind. Now, 99% of my work of Microsoft Visio has been migrated to XMind and my headhaches have disappeared. Thank you for your product that have upgraded the quality of my work (creation of training supports and videos)
Xmind has been part of my super powers for awhile now. What a tool! I use it in so many ways. Recently I did a fish one chart (cause and effect) and then turned it into a action-aspiration diagram. Wow.
One prior study [22] has incorporated both mapping and retrieval practice. Undergraduate students who were given an immediate test on facts they had studied had better recall at one week than did those who studied the facts once, studied them repeatedly, or who drew a concept map. The authors concluded that retrieval practice was superior to concept mapping (for further discussion of this result, see [23], [24]). Even so, it should be emphasized that retrieval practice does not preclude mapping techniques, and it is possible that their combination (e.g. self-testing using a mapping technique) would be more beneficial than either technique alone. This potential to combine techniques was noted by the authors [22], while Roediger [25] has discussed the need for studies on combinations of learning techniques.
In half of the classes (one class from each year, randomly selected), the children made notes in the form of a mind map, writing the name of the country in the center of the page, and drawing lines outwards to facts grouped by their categories. All classes at the school regularly used this form of mind mapping to represent facts, such as historical knowledge, or the attributes of characters in reading books. In the other half of the classes, the children were asked to make notes in any way they liked except for mind mapping. Examples of mind maps and notes made in this study are shown in Figures 1c and 1d, respectively.
Twenty-three children were unavailable at either the one- or the five-week tests, leaving one hundred and eighty-six children for the analysis of fact learning. Mean percentage recall scores for each condition, at each test, are shown in Table 2; Table S2 shows the number of participants from each year group in each condition. Figure 2 illustrates the mean recall results across the one- and five-week tests, first for the retrieval practice and non-retrieval conditions, and second for the mind maps and no mind maps conditions.
To assess the effects of retrieval practice and mind mapping at both time-points, we ran a three-way (222) ANCOVA, including retrieval practice group (retrieval practice vs. non-retrieval) and mind mapping group (mind maps vs. no mind maps) as between-subjects factors and time of test (one or five weeks) as a within-subject factor. As in Experiment 1, we used multiple regression to identify related covariates: in this experiment, age, test type (Primary 4, Primary 5, or Primary 6/7) and facts recorded during the learning phase were all significantly related to the one-week score (all p-values
Like Karpicke and Blunt [22], we found that retrieval practice improved fact recall, whereas a mapping technique had no main effects, even though the use of the latter is more widespread in schools. Our design additionally allowed for the evaluation of mapping in combination with retrieval practice, which we found did not have any special benefits for recall. However, in Experiment 1, we did find that retrieval practice and mind mapping interacted significantly, such that mind mapping was superior only in the non-retrieval condition. This finding was not replicated in our second experiment, where the interaction was very far from significance. Since the procedures were so similar across the two experiments, and since Experiment 2 had a larger sample size, the interaction in the initial experiment may have been a false-positive.
First determine the main purpose of your mind map and write it down. Since mind maps start from the inside and expand outward, your central idea will become the core topic of the diagram. Your main concept could be:
Maintain organization within your mind map by using standard colors for the different levels of thoughts within your diagram. If you are using Lucidchart, the colors will be managed for you. Furthermore, using images will help you to both visualize, and memorize the various parts of your mind map. Images can also be used to link shapes instead of the traditional box shape.
Lucidchart is an incredible tool that will make organizing even complex problems very simple. As you continue to create mind maps you will find that Lucidchart is incredibly easy to use for both the beginner, and more advanced users.
I would LOVE the ability to integrate the use of Mind Maps in smartsheet! I currently use Ayoa as my mind mapping tool, but I think any type of Mind Mapping capability would be great. I use mind mapping in my personal life, to take notes for school and meetings, and during project planning sessions. It's a great tool for brainstorming what types of tasks, dependencies, constraints, risks, etc. may be at play and the visual seems to get the brain flow going with the rest of the team. Having a way to take a mind map and pull it into smartsheet as tasks with hierarchy would be awesome!

I guess I had heard the term mind mapping before, but never really paid attention. Right now, I am feeling overwhelmed with several projects and doing my usual lists just seems inadequate. Thanks for mentioning this topic. I think it will be helpful. I just tried it this morning about one of my projects and it seems helpful. I like the branching out idea and putting things down even if they seem unrelated at first. My mind has been going in a thousand directions and perhaps this will give some clarity and help me get things done.
I like using a mindmap instead of an outline for medium sized writing. I do transition it to online where it is easier to move things around. But starting on paper engages my brain more. I like to use larger pieces of paper, an A4 journal or even a tabloid sized piece of paper.
Back in the dark days when I used to run windows I used to use MindJet Mindmanager and I found it to be very good. Since I have been using Ubuntu as my main operating system I have been trying to find a replacement mind map software to use but have not had any luck finding a good replacment. So far I have tried VYM, kdisset and Semantik. I have either found them not to be very good or have a nasty habit of crashing.
Freeplane is a powerful and free software for building the mind maps. It is a redesigned version of the well known FreeMind, and is created by one of FreeMind's key developers. I prefer it over FreeMind since there are more options. Also, questions or problems with the program are answered and fixed MUCH faster.
These answers should be updated as many of these programs appear to be obsoleted. I like the aesthetic and deceptive simplicity of Workflowy, but i'm finding with some things I want more flexibility than an outline or board view will allow - something like a mind map or infinite canvas, but ideally with the fractal nature of Workflowy bullets or cards (whereby one can keep going down and down more and more steps).
