We live in a world on fire. This year the Daily Meditations will explore contemplation as a way to build Radical Resilience so we can stand in solidarity with the world without burning up or burning out. The path ahead may be challenging, but we can walk it together.

What or who counts as indigenous is a bottomless rabbit hole, and it depends very much on the context. I think Yunkaporta captures these complexities well with light brushstrokes and sparkling examples, like the boy who recites the digits of pi as part of his indigenous practice, the elder who has a new understanding of cane toads that has changed them on his Country, or the notion that chicken wings and curry powder sometimes fit the definition of aboriginal food more plausibly than kangaroo meat.

Cities are great. They can be wonderful places to live. They can be real testaments to human skill and beauty. But they suck resources from other places, and they are not sustainable. The same applies to colonial metropoles, and the Global North lifeways that suck resources from the Global South. These modes of living are not aligned with the patterns of creation discerned from living within a specific landscape.

the ancient peoples of Zimbabwe who once made cities of stone lived within a civilization, until it inevitably collapsed. This was not an indigenous culture just because its inhabitants had dark skin. Civilisations are cultures that create cities, communities that consume everything around them and then themselves. They can never be indigenous until they abandon their city-building culture, a lesson the Elders of Zimbabwe have handed down from bitter experience through deep time (p.70)

in our culture we avoid the unsustainable practice of concentrating violence into the hands of one privileged group, or outsourcing violence to other places so we can enjoy the fruits of it without having to see it. Violence is part of creation and it is distributed evenly among all agents in sustainable systems to minimize the damage it can do (p.202)

Getting dressed is a universal human trait, but the textile industry is collapsing environmental systems everywhere. Relearning basic skills and taking back the agency in what we wear and how we wear it is an act of resistance and an invitation to reimagine ways to inhabit the planet.

Resilience is a program of Post Carbon Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the world transition away from fossil fuels and build sustainable, resilient communities.

I write every day to inspire my Christian family, offering tools to build a genuine and nourishing relationship with the Lord. These days I do that against a backdrop of the news: stunning, surreal, almost unbelievable. It feels like the world has gone mad.

The people governing us need wisdom. The people running cities and counties and states, our country, and all nations, need wisdom. Of course, they need it every day, but times like these reveal just how valuable wisdom is. As citizens of a democracy, we re-evaluate the hearts and motives of those we elected to office. Or in some cases, just allowed others to elect to office, while we went about our business, hoping and trusting God would just see to all that.

My point is this: we also need wisdom. For how to pray. To know how to respond to the darkness on display in the world. How to talk to our children about all that. Wisdom to discern the hearts of those we will soon be called to elect to public office. Not to mention, wisdom to live our lives well.

The Apostle James wrote a spot-on sermon-ette in his letter to first generation Christians, about the difference between the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God. He draws sharp contrasts between these, and brilliantly sums up what the balance of Scripture says (which is A LOT):

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

I assure you, there are sincere Christians out in the world right now contributing to the chaos, because they know Scripture without knowing how to walk with God Himself. This is what the Bible describes as having knowledge without wisdom or understanding.

My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

While the world waits for you and me and all the redeemed children of God to learn how to live that life, let us pray for the world. For God to graciously pour His wisdom on those who govern us, even as He sends His rain on the evil and the good.

Walking can do wonders for our mental and physical health. Explore the evolutionary biology, history, and philosophy behind the steps we take before exploring the intentional grounding technique. What is it? Where does it come from? And what can guest expert Francis Sanzaro teach us about connecting meaningfully with the terrains that lie underneath our feet?

With no movie theaters or shopping malls to frequent, ancient peoples turned to the natural landscapes available to them. See how cultures old and new valued and thought about nature throughout time. Examine the importance of light in wellness and sleep. And reunite with Francis Sanzaro to talk through ways you can better connect with the natural world in your life.

Meditation is a powerful ancient technique worth examining in closer detail. Unearth the origins of meditation before exploring tantra, one of its many forms. Then, sit down with spiritual leader and self-professed tantra enthusiast Dr. Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati to talk about how the myriad ways meditation can improve our lives.

With a little bit of gumption, we can intelligently shape the world that surrounds us. Learn how important but relatively simple it is to curate your life by studying the ancient minds and methods that thought about it first. Finish by talking to Ronald L. Banks about what it takes to live a minimal lifestyle.

I took some time to study this, and do you know what I learned? In Greek, there are two words for will. One of them is boulema, which stands for commands and laws and rules. The other one is thelēma, which stands for desires. When we offer ourselves to God, he transforms our minds, and we understand his desire. We understand his heart. His heart is perfect and good and pleasing.

Through Godly wisdom, there is healing that can come into our lives and our communities: our family members, our co-workers, our church, our neighborhood, the world. When we make the decision to offer up ourselves as a living sacrifice and let God transform us, we can positively influence the world through his power and not our own. We can make good decisions and live without fear, through his wisdom not our own. What if we lived like that?
