Kansas City Standard on the KIM-1

The Kansas City Standard is the way of storing Cassette tapes on nearly all other computers than the KIM-1. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_standard )

Digging through old mags I've found an interesting side note that it is possible to read this tapes on the KIM-1:

The described potentiometer to adjust is named VR1 in the letter. Is this the RV1 poti on the PAL-1s cassette interface, or am I missing something (because RV1 is described as output control in the manual)?

Any hints?
