Thanks, Liu.

I have tried a number of USB-C cables that do not work—they don't power up the USB-to-TTL device at all. The only one I've gotten to work somewhat is a USB-to-USB-C cable connected via a dongle on my laptop end. The USB-to-TTL device lights up and blinks on data transmissions from my laptop (MacBook Pro 2017 running Terminal app), but still no "KIM" response from my PAL-II.

Is anyone out there using a Mac Laptop running the Terminal app to communicate with the PAL-II? If so and you've got it working, please let me know the precise cable you are using with a link to where to purchase it!

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

Any USB-C data cable will be OK. Some cables that come with cellphones might be charge-only with just two wires and may not work.

I used a very normal cable on my macbook pro (m1) with minicom.

Just in case, did you jump the wire on PAL-2's application port for the serial connection?

Yes, I jumpered Application connector 21 to V.

I have also tried using my MacBook Air 2020 M1 machine. Same behavior as my Mac Powerbook 2017—I need to use a dongle, the HW-234 lights up, and data lights blink when I type a character. But no "KIM" message comes back.

I might try using Minicom instead of Terminal.

Thank you for your responses!

You can also test your setup with any Arduino board. Connect TX, RX on the arduino to RX, TX, respectively, on the serial adapter and see if you get a connection on Arduino IDE. This will help to rule out any cable problems.

Connect both grounds and 5V on the Arduino and serial, that's important to power the Arduino, I forgot to add...
