Board of Intermediate and secondary Education (BISE) Lahore announced its Matric and Intermedate results a few days ago. According to the board 183857 students appeared and 90816 passed their matriculation giving us a percentage of 49.39%.
Out of 17 top positions from various categories, government school students bagged 9 of them, where as 1 private candidate and 7 private school candidates secured the rest of the positions. Overall Zeeshan Ali from Govt High School Shadara stood first, Haleema tayyab from Govt Pilot Secondary school , Wahdat colony stood second and Hasan Awais from Govt High School Shadara stood third.
The board decided to ban students appearing privately in matric but temporarily lifted the ban as school associations and parents were concerned about the future of their children. Pakistan education watch studied the figures of private science students appearing in all the boards in Punjab and found out that approximately 51% students appear privately. However the figure for Lahore board is even higher.
This year 62273 students appeared in science regularly whereas 82667 students appeared as private science candidates.
If the government school laboratories are well equipped and all children get access to science education then there’s no harm in making such decisions, however allowing students to appear privately does not harm anyone and only allows students to pass matric at their pace.
For the last few years BISE has not been able to decide whether the 9th and 10th class examinations should be held in parts or together. Almost every year the students, teachers and parents have undergone a lot of experimentations like guinea pigs.
We request the officials to make a final decision and to inform the schools at least one year ahead so that they can prepare their students according to the new patterns.
On top of it BISE has increased the registration fee of matric from Rs 275 to Rs 400 which is other than the examination fee. The increase has been an extra burden on the parents.
In the Intermediate exams 97301 students appeared and 70713 passed giving a percentage of 72.67, much higher than matric. Ifrah Saeed from Lahore college University secured 1st position, M Mehran Khizar from Punjab College of Science secured 2nd position, Saba Asghar from District Public School Okara and Mariam Saif from Kinnaird College Lahore secured 3rd positions respectively.
The University of Punjab also announced its results and this year only 45640 students passed out of 17,066. The percentage came out as 26.68%, a drop from last year’s result.
Madiha Manzoor from Govt College Faisalabad secured 1st position in BSc and Nosheen Goshi from Queen mary college secured 2nd position. Asima Tabassum from Govt College Jhang stood 1st in BA, Rabeel Shaukat, a private candidate from Gujranwala secured 2nd position and Sadia Attiq another private student from Lahore secured 3rd position.
Another concerning factor is that about 12 colleges around Punjab showed 0% result in BA/BSc and most of the colleges are government colleges. These colleges include HI Degree College Taxilla Cantt, Govt Millat degree College Faisalabad, Govt College Bhera Khel, Prince Salman College of Professional Education, Govt Waris Shah Chandiaala, Himayat College for Women Multan Rd, Wise College for Girls Gulberg Lahore, Govt degree College Baseerpur Okara, Govt Degree College Pindi Bhattian and Govt College for Women Shore Koat.
We congratulate the students, teachers and parents of the high achievers and hope that they continue to work hard to bring honour to our country.
We request the government to spread education everywhere and to lift the ban on private science students until government is not able to provide science education to all students, as they had promised on several occasions. We also request the government to take action against the colleges who have failed to produce any results as the government money and resources are being wasted.
