URGENT APPEAL HRCP

 

Threats to Christian MPA Mr. Saleem Khursheed Khokhar of Sindh Assembly

 

Human Rights Commission of Pakistan requests your urgent intervention in the following situation

 

Description of the situation:

 

Mr. Saleem Khurshid Khokhar is member of Sindh Provincial Assembly of Pakistan. He belongs to the Christian minority and member of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He is President of All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA), Sindh Chapter.

 

On 18.4.2012 Mr. Saleem Khurshid Khokhar was present at the Supreme Court of Pakistan; Islamabad in the case of a Hindu girl Rinikle Kumari, to express solidarity with the Hindu girls. After the hearing he publicly expressed concern about the forced conversion of minorities in Pakistan.

 

After this he received the following frantic text message in Roman Urdu on his cell No. 0300-2583365 from 0306-2397468  “ Is country main sirf Muslim hi amn say reh saktay hain aur kisi ko yahan izzat say nahein rehne dya jayegaga. Yeh country sirf musalmanoon k liye bana hai. Hum kisi Mullah ki bay izzati bardasht nahein kar saktay. Chief Justice ka aaj khula ishara hai yeh Hindu k lye.”

 

(In this country only Muslims can stay in peace and nobody would be allowed to live with honour in this country. This country was created only for Muslims. We would not tolerate insult of any Mullah. Chief Justice today indicated this is for Hindus)

 

After receiving this threatening text message Mr. Saleem Khurshid Khokhar submitted n application to the Station House Officer SHO, Police Station, Clifton, District South Karachi on 20.4.2012. With the intervention of Law Minister of Sindh Mr. Ayaz Soomro FIR No. 93/2012 dated 28.4.2012 was registered at Police Station Clifton but no arrest has been made so far.

 

Action requested

 

Please write to the authorities in Pakistan urging them:

 

1. He and his family members should be provided protection.

2. Government should hold a judicial inquiry into this matter at appropriate level.  

3. Government should take concrete measures to inculcate a sense of security among the religious minorities living in Pakistan

4. Strict action should be taken against religious extremists who preach hatred against the religious minorities in Pakistan.

We express our deep concern about the life of Mr. Saleem Khurshid Khokhar MPA, Sindh Assembly and his family members.

 

1. We demand that he and his family members should be provided protection.

2. We demand that government should hold a judicial inquiry into this matter at appropriate level. 

3. We demand that government should take concrete measures to inculcate a sense of security among the religious minorities living in Pakistan

4. We demand that strict action should be taken against religious extremists who preach hatred against the religious minorities in Pakistan.

 

 

It is worth mentioning that present government had failed to protect Punjab Governor Salman Taseer who was murdered by his own bodyguard in Islamabad. And on 4 March 2011 Mr. Shahbaz Bhatti, Federal Minister of Minorities, Government of Pakistan and Chairman All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) was murdered in broad day in Islamabad.
