CHIEF Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has made a promise with the Lahore High Court Bar Association that the judges vacancies in the high court will be filled by elevating professional lawyers, especially from Lahore.

On the LHCBA invitation, the CJP also agreed to visit the Bar soon, said a press release issued by LHCBA Secretary Arshad Malik Awan here on Thursday.

A delegation of LHCBA office-bearers had called on Justice Chaudhry in Islamabad to convey him the lawyer’s concern on recommendation of sessions judges for the posts of the LHC judges by the judicial commission in place of lawyers.

The bar leaders also requested the CJP to constitute a bench of the SC at its Lahore registry on a permanent basis so that huge backlog of cases could be reduced.

The CJP keenly heard the suggestions of the bar representatives and assured them of materialising the same, the press release added.

LHCBA President Asghar Ali Gill, Vice-President Mian Muhammad Jahangir, and Finance Secretary Mian Muhammad Azam were among the delegation.

Facebook case: The Lahore High Court on Thursday sought till May 10 a complete record of all previous petitions filed against American social network website Facebook for holding blasphemous contests.

Justice Azmat Saeed passed this order on a petition, seeking a permanent ban on accessing Facebook website in territorial limits of Pakistan for again holding an objectionable and blasphemous contest “2nd Annual Draw Muhammad Day-May 20, 2011”.

The petition has been filed by Mohammad & Ahmad, a public interest litigation company, through its Chairman Mohammad Azhar Siddique advocate. Azhar pleaded to the court that due to holding of fresh competition, SHO Civil Lines Police Station be directed to register a criminal case under Section 295-C and other relevant provisions of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against the perpetrators.

Petitioner has sought directions for the federal government to stop display of material with respect to blasphemy of any religion or Holy Prophet on Facebook and all other such websites in Pakistan.

He said the government be directed to establish a permanent authority, having legal status, who would monitor such objectionable activities across the world, so that blasphemy of the Holy Prophet should be banned forever, including the holy personalities of all religions.

He requested that Facebook and all similar websites be permanently blocked or banned in Pakistan for airing, placing and visualising caricatures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

During the hearing, the court observed that blasphemy of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in any case would not be allowed.

After hearing the arguments, the court adjourned the matter and sought the record of earlier petitions. He said the mischief of the international internet website ‘Facebook’ against Islam was still going on unabated, as it had once again announced to hold contest of blasphemous material on May 20 next under the title “Annual Draw Muhammad Day”.
