The most helpful advice I have ever received

To be frank, it seems that I am quite a stubborn person who tends to
ask for advice from some of my friends or elders, but few of them
would work.
However, there was one time, I have recevied one piece of good advice
from my teacher who taught me elementary korean at that time and it
did change my method on learning foreign language somehow.
Well, I thought that I was quite conscientious in learning foreign
languages in which I am quite interested. But sometimes I was said to
be used to spliting hairs about grammar learning. Especially when I
was learning korean, I used to concentrate on every details whenever
speak or write korean by consulting grammar books, which resulted in
chasing after my teacher everyday after class, questioning. And some
of the questions are too unreasonable even for my korean teacher, who
is korean native speaker, to answer. Beacuse, you know, the language
is only a lingual tool for people to communicate with each other, it
seems more likely to be a habit than a formula to recite.
I failed in the first regular exam.
Then, I was invited to my teacher's office and was given some good
advice on how to adjust my korean learning method, such as, doing much
more reading instead of focusing too much on grammar; and I was
adviced to watch some korean dramas to help with improving my
listening comprehension. I accepted that sincerely and got myself
quite improved.
p.s. I think that my attitude toward study was supposed to be
recongnized by my teacher at least, because grammar learning is still
the most elementary step upon all the others after all, right? :)

The best advice that I have ever received is it from my father. The
advice is “Do not try to find the factor of the problem from other
people. That the problem is related with you. Every problem that is
related with you is always made by your behavior.”
When I heard it first time, I could not under stand it deeply. After a
while I gotten along, I could understand what he wanted explain to me.
I cannot remember the point of the first time that I heard it from
him. I heard the advice we are together whenever, wherever, especially
when we are drinking alcohol. I reckon it is his motto of life.
I respect my parents so much and it is their main opinion of their
life. I want to copy them. That is why I try to what they recommend
for me. They also always tell me if I mind what a seniors’ saying I
can get a cake even l am slipping.
I try to find the factor of the problem from me if I got. It is the
most effective solution for every problem. If I try to find the factor
from other people, while I finding that, our relation ship is harmed
because of my wrong mind, and it cannot be a strong solution the way
right.
I would have good relationships between people because of that. In
additionally it makes me mind about my behavior.
It makes me stronger, wiser and generously.
I really thank them.

I'd love to listen advices and sometime tips about what I do. they
help me to keep awake and focus on what I should do.
The best advise I have ever received... well first thing comes to my
mind is the one that my friend told me when I hesitate about
somethine.
It is really hard to translate in English but I will do my best to
express it 100 %
well it is...

"When you are sitting on a bicycle, It is too hard to balance first
and move but once you pedal it, you will get the balance and move.
People usually get scared and don't even try to take their feet off
the ground saying "I am off the balance! how can I even move right
now!!!" but You gotta move on. stop thinking what kind of situation
you are in, what circumstances you are with. just believe yourself and
move"

When I heard that I almost cried. I was only thinking about How
difficult situation I was in.
He was right. I stopped hesitating and tried. then things went really
well. my worry was useless.

He is still my best friend.

I have a great deal on my mind . When something is happended to me,
I'm really worried about it.
I have something hanging over my head. My nerves are always on edge.
So I always get angry to my boyfriend for nothing. Because my
boyfriend is always with me. He trys to understand and encourage me.
When I'm worried about something, he always talks to me.

"Don't worry, it's nothing to be afraid of. I think you abase yourself
because you don't have self-confidence and you are not proud of
yourself either. You don´t have to humble yourself too much. And,
please be proud of yourself.
And, you must respect everything about yourself."

His words make me get my spunk up. so I try not to think deeply. When
something is happened to me, I take a cheerful view of life now. ^^
I'm always thankful to him.

The best advice I have ever received is it from one movie.
There were words in the japanese movie.
"Children can't choose their parents, but parents also can't choose
their children."
If there is a person who has affected me the most in my whole life, I
would choose my father.
Of all relationships in the world,

I think the relationships between parents and their children are the
closest.
And for myself, they used to say that I resemble my father
when they come to personality, habits and values.
However, not only has he given me advice when I have problems with
others,
but he always tells me about many good stories and his own
experiences.

Especially, After entering university,
I have had lots of chances to share opinions about my society with
father.
His words make me stronger.
Also Our relationship between my father and I is to be friendly.

Since I was a young age , I often obey my father and should follow
his words. Sometimes I thought that my father is absolute .But a lot
of practices has proved that the words of my father are allways right.
After, when there were some trouble whit me I often ask for my
father's advice. And I'd love it becouse my father can give me a good
advice.
when I was the second year of college ,I heard a information that

my own cost.Although my specialty is Korean but I did not have
confidence to study in a foreign country far away from my parents and
I also thought the cost is very expensive.I told it to my father asked
for advice .My father said it was a good chance I should go and asked
me to do not worry about the money. So I came to South Korea to
fininsh my studying .Now I thought I managed it well either in
studying or life.I thank my father very much for giving me a good
advice .And I will try my best.

Izard,

How fortunate to have received such good advice. It sounds like when
we study languages there is a balance we find between putting forth
effort and letting a language come to us. I've always found it
interesting that when I've left Korea for extended periods of time
(ie. 2 years or so) I'm able to pick up where I left off when I get
back and produce the same amount of language that I could when I
left. Maybe the break to lets my brain reorganize itself and allow
things to sink in?

Min-ji,

Sounds like your father has a good motto. Too often people look to
blame external factors like other people or where they are when things
don't go well. What a great piece of advice you've been given. I'm
looking forward to trying to apply it to my life now. I'm sure it
will make me a better friend, leader, teacher, son, and eventually a
father!

Se-min,

Powerful stuff! How true it is that worrying can hold us back.
Somewhere somehow I suppose our fears help keep us safe. Yet, they do
tend to hold us back as well. I guess its one of those uniquely human
qualities that allows us to overcome our fears and as your friend
advised, "just believe in ourselves and move."

Jeong-hee,

Sounds like you've found yourself a keeper! How great it is to have
someone who understands you so well. People have a tendency to fall
into something called deferred aggression. That means when something
has angered us, we will look to anyone around us to take it out on,
sometimes we even take it out on the people we love. Only when
someone truly understands you can they actually see the difference
between when you're angry at them or angry at something else. Lock
that guy up for the long term! :)

Wang-ying,

Interesting to note that part of the best advice you received had to
do with overcoming your fear. Se-Min mentioned a similar situation of
receiving advice at a time of being afraid to move forward. I just
want to say that I hope you can continue to take measured risks in the
future and continue to overcome your fears!

Dear Ben:

The best advice that I have received was from my father. That is
just a simple Chinese proverb. But I have learnt so much from it and
have used it in my life gradually. “wisdom in the mind is better than
money in the hand”, may be it has a similar meaning to this English
proverb. My father think that one day I will leave parents to live by
myself, so it is necessary for him to give me some useful advice. So
he told me this saying. But I was just a little child so I couldn’t
understood it clearly. May be money is much better than abstract
knowledge for a child. I thought if I have money I could do anything
that I want. the meaning of knowledge is too difficult for me to
understood and I didn’t know how to use the knowledge that I have
master in my real life. But I know it must be a useful word and always
try my best to comprehend it. When I left my parents to study 5 years
ago ,I found my world has changed, I couldn’t received any help from
my parents and friends when I was in trouble. Sometimes money is not
omnipotent, it is difficult for me to do anything alone. During the
life I understood I must have enough ability and knowledge to confront
the trouble. If I have enough knowledge I can use it in any fields, I
can change it to the practiced ability. So I should master enough
ability and knowledge to enrich myself.

for I got confidence a little bit.

I've ever heard the most impressive advice is that
"Be a realist. But dream unrealistic dreams in your heart."
Maybe you've also heard before.
This slogan was from 'Che' while he was leading guerilla units for
Cuban revolution.
I heard this advice from radio when I was driving the car.
That time I was worried something.
It relates to my wish job so try to tell a little bit shy.
But I'm going to try it.
My dream is be a sports marketer in the future.
I don't know how to look at a woman who work at sports industy in
America.
But in Korea woman isn't easy to work at sports industy.
Cause it had long been considered male-dominated position.
Anyway I heard that advice at a time like this, it inspired me with
courage.
Now I'm working for 'Hanwha eagles'. Although It's just small part
that sell tickets for part-time job but would be sports marketer that
I sincerely hope. ^^

During the summer vacation, i was in the philippines to learn enlish.
Althogh it was too short to learn it,
i got many thing as well as English ability. that's the advice i
received from Philipina teacher.
At the time i almost finished my Enlish course and i was preparing the
mock job interview.
i was very tensed even though i had practiced several times. I didn't
want to make my teacher who taught me hard disappointed
and also don't want to fail my first english interview. But my hands
was already shaking and my heart also beated quickly.
i went to my teacher and asked her to help me. She told me "like
winner"
"behavior like winner" "Speak like winner" "Don't show your any
weakness to others "
she inspired me to do well interview. Actually i was still nervous and
my voice was trembling a little bit.
i tried to hide my trembling voice and stand correctly and answer the
questions attentively.
i could success my job interview and other students applauded me.
Especially my teacher was proud of me.
Of course i was proud of my self.
now it is still my worst thing and now i am still trying to do like
winner.

Sierra,

It's true what they say, "Knowledge is Power." Yet, it's also true
that Money is Power as well. All in all though, it's pretty hard to
make a lot of money if you haven't learned the skills necessary to
master a profession. What a great proverb your Dad told you! I also
like the idea that one can focus the knowledge and skills that they
develop and create a niche for themselves. I've always been amazed at
how, of all the information that has ever been presented to me, I've
only ever used a small amount of it for practical use. There seems to
be only small bits here and there that we actually take with us.
However, I think this next statement is in agreement with what your
father offered you as advice. The more we learn, the better we get at
learning. And as a result, the faster we can learn new things, the
more valuable we are, financially to others!

Keum-Yang,

Overcoming fear...you are in the right place! It is a common theme of
this week's journal entries. I hope you get a chance to read the
journals of your classmates. People have a variety of fears and
typically, when we are afraid, we seek advice. How great it is that
your teacher was able to help you in Canada! I have to agree with
her. Confidence is something that can help tremendously in learning a
language. I am shy-natured so I can relate to lacking confidence when
it comes time to speak a new language. I like what your Canadian
teacher taught you because by making mistakes, we make ourselves
learn. Always remember that everyone has different learning styles.
Some students learn better in an environment with many other students.
Some students enjoy a competitive environment. Others like a one-on-
one setting between just student and teacher. Everyone has styles
that they prefer. Even though we can't always choose which
environment we'll be learning in, we can choose which environment we
like best and then seek out those places in the future! :)

First of all, when can our class go to a baseball game for free???
Just kidding. That is great that you were able to actually overcome
the stereotype that women shouldn't be in the sports marketing
profession! Again, being able to dream unrealistic dreams seems to be
a uniquely human quality and one worth really putting energy into as
we evolve in our individual lives. What a great quote you posted! Go

that) ;)

Kyu-Min,

I've heard of a lot of Korean students studying English in the
Philippines. What a great experience! What I'm most impressed with is
that you put yourself in a situation as stressful as an interview. I
think interviews "take the cake" (top all) when it comes to providing
us with stress. I've actually had my voice crack in interviews I've
been on as well. What I was always taught, and what I believe to be
true, is that if you are nervous during and interview, its okay to let
the interviewer know. It shows that the job is important to you.
However, once you've explained that you are nervous, it is then also
important to continue on and push through that nervousness. One way I
have found to be relaxing during interviews is to put the pressure on
the interviewer by asking questions. Anytime we ask someone
questions, we are controlling the conversation. This also gives us
the opportunity to listen and learn more about our audience, which in
the case of an interviewer, will inevitably help answer the questions
he/she starts asking. Long story short: Learn the skill/art of asking
good questions. FYI: I'm still working on this skill as well :) Great
post!
