Hello,ben :D
this is not my faveorite traveling experience.
In my case, I'll wirte my embarrassed experience.
When I visited my aunt's house in florida, I went to restaurant
(olive garden) with my aunt.
We were looking at the menu. I was really excitied all of it.
Anyway, a waiter came to our table.
He asked us, "Are you ready?"
we said,
"Yes, Can we have tour of Italy(name of the menu) and
alfredo shimp pasta, please?"
and then he said,
" Would you like soup or salad?"
I thought he said supersalad.
Because he said soup or salad exceedingly fast!
I thought in America restaurants had supersalads.
So I said, "Yes, please"
But he looked me confused.
(I guess he probably thought 'yes what?'- _ -;;)
At that time, my aunt started laughing.
I didn't know why my aunt was laughing.
And then the waiter said "Soup or Salad?" very slowly.
oops! yes. I misunderstood.
It was not till then that I knew the fact.
I felt very embarrassed. Then I said,
"Sorry, salad, please."
The situation ended.
It was I would wish to erase in my memory,
but now when I think of it, make me smile, ^^
Ben,
Do you have embarrassed happen in Korea?
Why don't you share with us?^^

Dear Ben,
You have really given me a big nut to crack, for I am not a devotee of
traveling.
But there was really one time that is worth recalling to memory.
I don't know whether it could be called a travel, because I just went
to the Korean Consulate at Shanghai with my friend to obtain our
visas.
The reason why I regard that travel to be worthy of remembering is
because I had been waiting for that visa for nearly a whole year and
finally I got it, what's more, I would go to Korea with one of my best
friends for a further education. So, I mean the point is definitely
the travel itself, but it's purpose~
We had a three-day travel in Shanghai, of course, we went to the
Korean Consulate first as soon as we arrived there, but with out luck,
people who were in charge of that had left off work yet. Oh, god, who
knew that someone would finish his work before 4 o'clock early in the
afternoon~ So we were told that we should go back there again next day
in the morning. Then we did some sightseeing and shopping at some
interesting places while we were waiting for the door open to Korea...
As expected we obtained our visas smoothly the next day, happy as we
had all of our dreams realized...
We had a big feast to celebrate that before taking the plane~
Looking forward to your interesting traveling experiences~

P.S.
I'd be grateful if you can pay little attention to this request~
You know, there are Chinglish (that is, Chinese English) and Konglish
(that is, Korean English), cause we are not native speakers for
English, I think that we would be very grateful if you would like to
correct some obvious mistakes in either pronunciation or grammatical
usage of both our jourals and oral English, if time permits~~
Heartfelt thanks~

Izard,

In regards to your request for feedback on your grammar and
pronunciation: First of all, thank you for being so motivated! It's
great to know you'd like to further your English abilities. I'd like
to help. There is a free website available to anyone who wants to
register (I'm a big fan of free). I'm registered on the site, myself
as well. It's called livemocha.com. If you register on this site,
you can practice your English skills, from grammar and vocabulary to
actually recording your voice and attaining feedback from native
English speakers. What's more, if you add me as a friend on that
site, I can give you feedback on your responses. Feel free to take a
look. Again, it's livemocha.com. My username is ben_nesbit. If you
have any questions about it, feel free to call me or ask me during
class and I can show you on the computer and if there is enough
interest, I can do a demonstration on the projector.

I have to this pointed wanted to treat the journals as something of a
place to reflect and practice your written English skills. Because
you asked, I will try to focus more of my time on helping you with
your grammar. I do understand that grammar is a big part of you
learning to speak English well and that was one of the reasons i chose
your book. It actually does do a great job of focusing on key grammar
points along the way!

Since you asked: You said, "...there was really one time that is worth
recalling to memory.
I don't know whether it could be called a travel..." Instead you
should say, " ....there was really one time that is worth recalling to
memory. I don't know whether it could be called a traveling
experience..." -We don't use travel as a singular noun.

Nice work on your journal this week! Let me know what you think of
LiveMocha!

I love to travel, especially travelling alone and also I have been to
several coutries.
Among my travels if I choose the favorite experience, I want to write
the story that I was on the way to tibet. At the time, I almost
finished 3 month-travel and I was in a city next to Tibet in China. My
destination was Nepal and I had to pass through tibet to go Nepal.
There are 3ways to go tibet. The way I chose was the bus because it
was the cheapest one. I heard that it takes about 3nights and 4days
to get to Tibet and I had to buy a permit to go there. The permit
costed about $70, which was very expensive for me. I considered
whether to go because I didn’t have enough money to buy it. It
occurred to me that a friend who I met in China told me that if you
are not checked by local policeman on the bus, you can go there
without the permit. And he told me additionally that if you are
checked by him, you should get off the bus on the wide and rough road
of Tibet. I was scared but there were no choice for me. The good news
was that many chineses regarded me as chinese. Before getting on the
bus, I hadn’t shave my beard 3weeks to be looked like a native person.
I decided to say nothing all time while on the bus so not to be seen
as a foreigner. The bus was too narrow to stretch my legs. One guy who
seemed to be a monk asked me “Where are you from?”. I was embarrassed
and I thought how can I speak, if I speak English, many people will
know I;m foreigner. And if I speak Chinesepoorly, they will also know
that I am a foreigner who has horrible ability to speak chinese. I
told him “korea” and asked “Please don’t tell other people that I’m
korean”.”I don’t have permit”. He agreed. But a few minutes later, all
pessengers learned that I am korean because the monk asked me several
times. I gave up to hide my identity and enjoyed the travel with
others. Actually it was boring to say nothing. After that I had a
great time on the bus with funny Tibetans and other foreigners except
when the local policeman check the bus. When the policeman check the
bus, I pretended to be asleep. The other travellers helped me by not
giving away my secret.

Hello, Ben

I was traveling in Philippines with my friends about 3 years age.
At that time I was not good at English so, I could hardly understand
what they said.
First day, we visted a traditional park and Pagsanjan Falls(Name of
the river).
In the park, the guide told some historical stories and we listened.
There were many bronze statues of heroes.
Then, soldier worked in two shifts
but the guide explained they always took a pride in their work.

Do you know what "Pagsanjan" means in Korean?
It means something dirty or injured. And it seemed polluted water as I
think.
However, if we wanted to take a boat,we had to get our clothes wet.
Finally, we took the boat.

The problem was in the hotel.
At night, all we needed an adapter can convert to electronic machines.
My friend called to the frontdesk and said, we need an adapter'.
My friend wasn't perfect and wrong.
However, unfortunately they didn't understand. So, I tried to say
again.
And then we tried again and again.
A minute later, my friends and I realized why they didn't understand
because
their accent or pronounciation were more stronger than others.

So, we got a new idea to buy the adapter.
We stared write down the word and went down stair.
Finally, we got the adapter.

Hi, Ben! ^^

I have been to Japan twice. Tokyo was my first trip and Osaka was
second trip. I'll tell you my first Tokyo trip.
I had never had a opportunity to go abroad before. It was my first
time to go abroad. so I got little nervous and worried about that.
Actually, I didn't know anything about Japan. But I wanted to go my
abroad anywhere. I feared flying in airplanes because I have
acrophobia. so I couldn't fall asleep well, I got stiff all my body.

Anyway, I was finally arrived in Japan after many complications. but
there were many problems. I've frequently heard you must not travel
with your best friend.
I didn't know about that exactly. But When we have decided where to
go, all my ideas clashed with her ideas. It was not until then that I
knew about it. One day, I quarreled with her about little things.
Feelings reached its climax. She blew her top when I said bad things
to her. Then we didn't talk each other on our travels. I felt heavy.
so I decided to apologize to her. then we got along well. so we had a
great trip. I can't forget that. I learned by experience. Tokyo trip
will stay with me as a precious memory. ^-^

If anyone ask me about favorite traveling experience,
I will say "Mindoro in the Philippine" without any hesitation.
This area is not well-known unlike Boracay, Cebu and Palawan in the
Philippine.
It took 1night and half day to get to there from where I stayed.
Upon arrival, I was disappointed so much looking around the
surrounding.
it didn't look like tour spot. No restaurant, no stores..
Esepciallly, the beach was dark, narrow and dirty.

We decided to do scuba diving responding to the suggestion of one of
my friend.
It was the best choice i had ever made in my life.
After few times of practice, we went out to the sea by boat.
On the boat, it was my turn to dive. When I was about to dive, I was a
little scared.
But as I jumped into the sea, very warm water came into my diving
suit.
I felt relaxed and rested in the water.
Coral reef, all kinds of tropical fish fascinated my eyes. it
interested and delighted me every single minute in the water.
When I got to the wrecked ship, I felt like i became a treasure
hunter.
We brought one pack of bread wrapped up in plastic bag.
When I opened it, thousands of fishes rushed to me. it was fantastic
experince for me.
it was kind of new world to me. If I didn't try scuba diving,
I certainly missed one of amazing experience in my life.
Some time later, if i come to have my family, I want to visit this
place one more time.

Min-Hee,

Great story! Yes, in English, often times words are spoken and they
run together. I can certainly understand your confusion and
embarrassment. In fact, many native speakers have difficulty
discerning the phrase "soup or salad" as well. One restaurant found a
way to capitalize on this fact. It's called "Souper Salad" Not
surprisingly they serve a variety of good soups and provide a salad
buffet.

Hmm embarrassing story from Korea.... You're putting me on the spot?
Well, actually I did have an extremely embarrassing moment early on
living in Korea. I was studying Korean at the YMCA in Man-yeon-dong
and my Korean teacher asked me what my girlfriend at the time looked
like. I said, she is a "yepeun yeon." I am not sure where I heard the
word "yeon," (probably one of my students!) but after my teacher
explained to me what I just said, I felt very foolish. :(

Kyu-Min,

What an amazing experience! You really adapted well to what, for
many, would be a very stressful situation. Now on the scale of
things, you were quite the "venturer" on that trip! I'd love to see
pictures of your beard. :)

Ji-Sook,

I also had the opportunity to visit Pagsanjan Falls in the
Philippines. Actually, the story I told you guys in class when my
Korean friend had his bag broken into happened while we were on our
way to the Falls. It's funny how a word in one language means
something totally different in another. Once, after I returned to
Korea after vacationing in Thailand, my students asked me, "Where did
you go." I told them "Koh Pi-Pi" and they all laughed. then I
realized that I was saying, "Nose blood blood" in Korean! In the U.S.
we like to eat chips and salsa. My elementary students love hearing
chips and "seolsa." KK

Jeong-Hee,

Traveling with the right people can make or break any trip. I've been
lucky for the part to be able to travel with people I always got along
with. Of course, it sounds like, even though you and your friend
faught on your trip to Tokyo, it ended up bringing you closer
together. There are many reasons that traveling can become stressful.
I think that's one reason I like to take vacations relaxing at the
beach!

I spent a month in Thailand last year.
At first, I traveled with my friend, but he and I argued about a
little thing on the plane. Finally,
I decided to travel alone. I was so nervous because he has a lot of
knowledge of Southeast Asia.
In addition, I had plans to go to three countries such as Thailand,
Cambodia and Laos.
However, I made friends ,who were from Italy, more easily than I
thought.

We went to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat. However, we had some trouble
in understanding each other,
because none of us could speak English and I couldn't speak English.
Also, they were very loud every evening and I couldn't sleep well.
Moreover, the hot weather made me exhausted. As time went by, I really
missed my friend.

One day I met my friend traveling along in downtown Siem Reap.
I was really happy to meet him, and then I sincerely apologized to him
for my behavior.
After that, I really enjoyed my travels.

My favorite traveling remembrance is Australia. I've traveled there
for 1 year.
Actually when I finished a sophomore I decide to out of school for
temporary.
So I got an Australia working holiday visa and l did travel and work
in Australia.

On 30 Sep 2005, I departed for Brisbane with my friend.
At that time we were too young and too thoughtless.
We didn't prepare much. Kind of where do we stay, where do we
travel....
moreover we couldn't hear Australia english to say nothing of speaking
English.
(Now I think that Australia accent wasn't big problem. The problem is
that we want to believe it.)

Anyaway we arrived Brisbane airport and stay 3~4hours in airport.
Talking about how we could get out of there.
Some people said 'Ignorance is blessing', that's true.
We take all of airport people's advice and then we can escape the
airport.

We stayed at backpackers for 2 weeks.
We did go to city tour, do shopping, eat delicious food, as much we
can do.
And then realized that we don't have money anymore.
We want to stay in city more but we don't have money so have to work
and make money.
That time someone told us 'Farm work make big money'.
I felt I can do everything for money and we went to farm.
At the farm we worked a lot, a lot, a lot. I never worked the farm in
the Korea so first time farm was a hell.
But human being are 'well adapted'. So was I.

I traveled from Brisbane to Melbourne include Tasmania.
Sometimes I experienced the bitters of travel troubles. But that
experiences make me strong more.

I don't know where came from such confidence. But now I really miss
there.
Miss the huge nature, the clouds on the horison, a seascape, a scene
on the street...
So I hope would be there again sometimes... maybe for honeymoon.^^

I love traveling arond. I went to couple of states in U.S, Philippine
and argentina. Unfortunately, I've never been to Europe, anyways.
If anyone asks me what's the best place, I would say 'Colorado'.
During a year and a half of my life in colorado, I had 2 winters.
I bet you know colorado is the best place to ski !!!!!
Last winter, I got 20 days of vacation. so I went to Vail. It is
pretty expensive place but I didn't spend lots of money for that.
Because I had my own equipments, a season pass and my friend offered
me a housing.
That was the best vacation ever.
I was sking all day long, and every single day. Vail is so huge so
that there still are some slopes I haven't tried.
and I met couple of nice people on a lift. we talked while the lift
was going top of the mountain.
The converstaion usually starts with a question 'where are you from?'
I surely have to say 'South Korea' because If I say 'from Colorado',
they will be disappointed of my english.
However, here is the problem. when I said 'from south korea', they
thought I came all the way from South Korea to ski in Vail.
Yes! they thought I am a very wealthy guy. but I am not at all !!!
It is OK whatever they think of me. because we're not gonna meet
again. Haha lol

Traveling another country is very precious experience for everyone,
especailly for students, like us.
I am planning to go to Japan this coming winter vacation and I will
travel more before I get married !!! haha~~

I went to Japan last summer with my friends.

If i think about it again now, It was a very poor trip.
I went everywhere but I depended on my friend to like a small child.
Because it was my a first trip abroad. So I didn't know a lot.

But this is clear. It was great time and I had a lot of new
experiences.
All day ride a ship and train, and I saw new things.

Especially I remember Otaru in Hokkaido.
Otaru in the peaceful fishing area is famous for music boxes and
glass.
Most people have to go there in the winter. becase there are a lot of
snow and snowy weather.
But it was the summer we went. So there were very quiet and peaceful.
We rent a bike and looked at Otaru.
Even now I could not forget that moment.

I haven't travelled widely in China, but if I have a chance to make
a tour, I think I'd like to visit some scenic spots. just like one of
my favorite traveling experience-----sand lake traveling.
If you like both desert and water, maybe the sand lake in northwest
China is a good idea. Sand lake is more than 80 square kilometers in
area, including 45 square kilometers of lake and 22 square kilometers
of desert. It attracts many visitors from China and abroad. Sand lake
is one of the best place for birds in China. you can enjoy sight of
all kinds of birds on the Bird-watching Tower.of course, there are a
lot of entertainment, such as water-motorcycling, wind surfing, sliding
on the dune and so on. my favorite is hot-air balloon, bungee jumping
and water-surface plane.and the camel train is so interesting that I
want to try it again . While enjoying in sand lake, you can see the
reeds seem to be endless at sand lake ,the blue sky, green water,
yellow sand , green reed, beautiful birds create a pure and peaceful
picture of nature.

Sincerely yours

Last year I was in Canada, before I came back to Korea.
I decided to go to rhe Rocky Mountains,
because so many people said that the Rocky Mountains are beautiful.
I tried to find a travel companion but I couln't
find anyone, because most people needed to go to school at that time.
Since I had to travel alone, I decided to take
a package tour affered by a travel agency.
I thought most people would come with their friends,
but some people came
alone like me. We became friends.
We talked about the there places we were going to visit.
Lake Luise is most remain
in my memories. It was my first time to see a glacier.
The glacier's color was emerald. It was great! Have you seen a wild
bear?
I saw a wild bear by accident. It was huge. I think Canadian care a
lot about nature .
I heard something surprising.
When drivers drine in a national park,
they can't beep their until the wild animals leave.
When I heard this fact, I thought about how much better Korea's
animals lives would be
if they lived in Canada. Anyway I had good time in Canada.

Minji Kwon - 0425009

This subject is very hard for me, because every trip is special for
me.
Hardly, if I have to choose only one I will choose the travelling
Ireland.
It was this April and, just traveled during the one weekend.
I have traveled there with other five friends. We had decided it very
instantly, because someone found the special rate for going there
then, decide it directly.
The trip was quite short then other, but we made lot of memories. The
final day was the strangest day during the trip.
In the morning, we were exhausted because of hang over. That is why we
went out of the hostel lately. We had breakfast fully, but then
rapidly we felt hungry soon.
For that reason, we tried to find some Irish pub in down town for
drinking beer and eating chips. However, we could not find it, so we
looked some restaurants near where we were. We found two Italian
buffet restaurants. One of them was pasta was main menu and another
one was pizza. Almost of us was want to eat pasta, but among us some
one strongly want to eat pizza, so the boy tried to persuade us to go
the pizza buffet. Then we accepted what he wants.
Finally we have been there and we started get some food from the salad
bar. It was point of this happening. After getting some food, we so
quiet and just eat pizza. Then, when the boy, who begged us, tried to
get second dish, he discovered his bag and camera was not there.
Actually, in the morning he boasted of the bag, it was made for press
staff of the discovery channel, but it was nothing special, so we just
played jokes about it. Everyone thought it is impossible to find it.
Because nobody saw them and there was crowded down town.
The owner was very frightened. Because the bag included everything
even his passport.
He ordered me to by a tobacco for him, at that time, I knew he quit
the smoking a tobacco. Then we drove him out of the restaurant to let
calm him down. Then we phoned to police office and tried to make idea
for help him. He was nearly crying and regretting about he choose the
pizza buffet. We could not find any idea. It drove us gloomy. At that
time, the eldest Korean friend came to the restaurant with the lost
bag like a hero. We did not know he tried to catch the robbers.
Actually, we did not know who robed it, because we concentrated to eat
the pizza, we just remembered the bag. It was so stupid. We were six
people and nobody knows that.
By the way, the eldest man solved it clearly, and he expressed how he
caught the robbers. He told us he imagined if he was the robber then
he did like as his imagine. Turn the corner and try to find some
public place. Then finally, he could find the bag. There were two
robbers and they just open the bag to scan something valuable. Then he
shouted, “Give it to me! If you don’t return it I’m gonna report you
to police!” because he thought the robber were illegal immigrant
people from south Asia. Then the robbers dreaded about it. That is why
they gave all of item from us and escaped from him.
Then when we checked his bag, finally we could find something
unexpected. That was the robbers’ hat and t-shirts. We reckoned the
robber gave us some souvenir of Dublin.
If the boy did not boast the bag, it was impossible.
Between the owner of the bag and the detector were lots small
arguments. They ignored each other by kidding, but after this
happening, they called each other my hero or my bros. it was quite
reversal.
Then after the restaurant, we looked around there. Every boy wants to
go pub, but I and another friend did not want it, so we separated
while the boys enjoyed drinking beer. On the way, we have been some
very good pub near there. Then while we return to the Dublin airport,
we recognized it was the most famous Irish pub in Ireland. The boys
were too unlucky.
When we arriving the airport, we faced climax event of the day. It was
airline delayed. While we going there we just play kidding about it.
It was the final event for us.
During this trip, we faced many inconvenience in Dublin, but we really
hope go there again. All of those made us enjoyable the trip.

Jun-Hyung,

As I was reading your story, I was reliving my own Philippines
experience underwater. What an amazing world it is in the sea. Those
fish are funny, aren't they? They all have different personalities
under there. I still remember a purple fish who really wanted me out
of his territory. Of course, I couldn't oblige him! :) It sounds like
you also enjoy being a venturer!

Sang-Mo,

It's interesting to me that you are the second student to write that
your best travel experience was defined by a fight between you and a
friend. It seems as though it is as important to choose good travel
partners as it is to choose a good travel destination! I can relate
to walking around an unknown country alone. I did that as well, when
I was young and was lucky enough to meet some good people. Of course,
I was very lucky because we all spoke English.

Sung-Hee,

Wow! What an experience! Now, I always thought I was adventurous but
I would never do what you did in Australia! You actually ran out of
money?? To me that is far too much risk to take in a foreign country.
Of course, I've never been to Australia so maybe its not as scary as
it seems. Still, the farm work sounds like quite a chore. If you do
go back for your honeymoon, I suppose you won't be stopping at the
farm again, huh?

Se-Min,

I am so jealous!!! I lived in Colorado for two years and never once
went to Vail!!! :( I certainly can understand what it means to travel
on a budget. My first big trip was also as a student in college. I'm
glad you got to speak some English on the ski lift while you were
there. It's good you told people that you are from SOUTH Korea. Often
times when I go back to the U.S. and tell people I live in Korea, they
ask me, "North Korea or South Korea?" I try not to laugh at them!
Funny how much we learn by traveling.

Woo-Jin,

It sounds as if your first trip abroad had you playing things safe.
You'd be classified under more of a dependable for this trip to
Japan. It sounds like you must have a great travel partner though!
Sometimes, as I've been learning, who you travel with is as important
as where you go!

Sierra,

It sounds like part of what you experienced in China is what we call
Eco-Tourism. This type of travel experience is extremely popular in
Costa Rica and other Central America locations. It's great to hear
that you were able to experience this in China, which often gets a bad
reputation as a heavy polluter. I have yet to go on any sort of Eco-
tour, but I am certainly looking forward to my first one. Who knows,
maybe I'll have to head to the bird watching tower in China's sand
lake!

Keum-Yang,

Yes! What a great experience. You actually got to see a wild bear.
How exciting! What you are saying is true from what I have found.
Canadians do take care of the environment around them. Much of
Canada, from what I've heard is pristine land, untouched by man. I
have been to Rocky National Park in Colorado so I know the Rocky
Mountains a little. What a beautiful place to visit!

Min-Ji,

What a story! Thank you for sharing all of that. How many people did
you travel with? It sounds like a lot! It can often make for a more
fun trip when traveling in a large group but, as it sounds you
experienced this, it can also cause strife between group members. How
fortunate that your group member's belongings were found, especially
by another member of the group. That is quite funny that the robbers
actually left their t-shirts in the bag after stealing it. I can only
imagine the relief on the victim's face when he saw his bag with his
camera and passport. Dublin, huh? Did you drink Guinness? Yum!

I'm very suprised when I see those hotels, the interior is so luxury,

just $25,but it has hundreds foods dispayed.very dilicious.and watched
