I can see .CR2 files only when I select in properties to view JPG. If I select Canon DLLs I get a Canon CR2 decode error or FORMATS Plugin it crashes with a memory error. I tried updating the .CR2 files as their zip contains older files but I still get an error (albeit different) either way.

Do you guys shoot raw only, or are you shooting it with jpgs? I can get to work with jpgs only because it is reading the jpgs but it won't recognize that there is more than 1 raw file in a directory.

Actually 3.95 is available now.

Not only must you install Irfanview but also the plug-ins and Canon

CRW files (file can be downloaded from Irfanview, link on plugins

page).

I am having problems with Irfanview and 3.92/3.95 as well.

you can find pictures anywhere. it's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. you just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy. -- eliott erwitt

For the 1D MkII files I find that the 'Load using FORMATS plug-in' option gives terrible colour. The 'Load using Canon DLLs' option is much better.

I am guessing that it is one, or more, of the Canon files that needs updating.

What you need to do (at least it worked for me) is to make a change in the box below the "other" one you referred to so that the radio button is selecting the appropriate load action. In the case where you have associated CR2 files with Irfanview then the option that says "Load only associated... " will work. If you haven't made the association change then you have to edit the string of file types in the option below this one so the CR2 files are loaded.

Ok, what Victor describes will sort of work, but that is only part of the problem. What he describes adds the .cr2 extension to those associated with Irfanview through the Explorer. The method he describes will only work if you also select the radio button directly beneath where you type the .cr2 extension. Select the radio button titled: "Load only associated types during moving through directory". If the other radio button is selected, Victor's method will not work.

However, there is a better way. The other radio button mention above, titled "Load custom file types:" is fillow by a list of extensions seperated by the '' (vertical bar) character. This is the list of "custom types" referred to in the title. You can select this radio button and just add "CR2" to the end of this list, and that will work as well. It also has some other advantages as follows.

Let's say you've decided to only associate image files with Irfanview. Further let's assume that you also decided that .PSD files should additionally NOT be associated with Irfanview so that when you double-click a .psd file it will launch Photoshop. That's all cool. Buth if you have selected the "Load only associated types during moving through directory" button, then Irfanview will NOT show .psd files when moving throuugh a directory. However, if you select "Load custom types" and PSD files are in the custom list, then those files will show along with all other listed types when moving through through the directory.

Basically this allows you to have a list of files that will show when moving through a directory which is independent of the associated files. This could be a sub-set, as super-set, or an intersection of the associated files. In my case it is a super-set of the associated types.

I noticed after posting that the vertical bar character shows up as a tilde. This must be something the forum is doing to interpret that character specially. The vertical bar character (which symbolizes the OR operation in most programming languages) is the shift charadter above the backslash character on most PC keyboards.

I've googled this issue a few times but I have never managed to find a solution. I've closed all tabs in frustration and gone back to living my life but I just can't anymore. I need some sort of workaround. I can't have to intiate an import of every folder in Lightroom just to see what pictures are in that folder(I do manage my folders, but sometimes you just wanna take a quick look). There has to be some easier solution, and a free one.

On edit, it sounds like the 5DIV doesn't have an imbedded jpg so the standard viewers like IrfanView aren't going to work. It sounds like you will have to stay with DPP or a full featured program instead of getting a fast preview.

I switched to IrfanView a LONG time ago as my default image app for Windows and it has handled every form of graphics file I have thrown at it including the RAW files from my 1DM2 and 1DX M2. It is fast and free and also handles fairly obscure stuff like djvu files. It also provides some basic image manipulation stuff when you want to do stuff with files on a pad or very limited PC that won't really support DPP or other heavy duty stuff.

Edit: come to think of it, it's not even necessarily CR2 since the 1DX mk2 is CR2 as well and I can open those. probably has something to do with what you mentioned about the imbedded jpg - it's weird though, why wouldn't the MK4 have that? is this a "Canon issue" after all and not necessarily a Windows one?

it almost worked... you could download a plugin for CR2 files off of IfranViews website and activate it through the preferences, but it still gave me a decode error. it said: "Note: this PlugIn requires additional Canon DLLs. You can download these DLLs with the Canon ZoomBrowser program: or try here: _crw.zip (check "Readme.txt" for instructions and install!)"
