I ran the lower section (1st Fork TH into Sand Creek, 4.7
miles) of the Piedra River Trail this morning. I have run this trail, (11
miles end to end) O&B so many times I see it in my sleep & have a
very deep love for it as with any long relationship is developed. I
have intentionally not gone to see the damaged from the Little Sand Creek Fire
on the trail, till I might see some indication of hope & rebirth. Was very
pleased with the things I saw.
There are pockets where a small group of tree were incinerated and 10-15
feet away the trees have a small amount of scorching but will recover &
flourish, in some places the ground cover is cleared way with the lower trunk
& maybe some lower branches scorched but with a good chance of recovery or
no damage. Only 1 section(around 3 miles in) was devastated from down low to the
summit of the ridge and only 150-200+ yds across. The most incinerated were
the standing dead or down that already existed.
Was a good run, tho I stopped often to get a pic. on the way in. Was
pleased to see that for miles things were not stripped clear & that Mother
Nature was already healing her wounds, was amazed that in just a
month's time things were looking as hopeful as they are. Get out & check on
the Piedra Trail yourself. Enjoy the pics! Jeff B.
